Blog Action Day ’09: Let our voices be heard by the world up to the Copenhagen Summit!

blog action day 09

Editor’s Note: Much thanks to Flow, Chief Advocacy Officer here at FV for his passion for advocacy such as his focus on Climate Change, which is this year’s theme for Blog Action Day.

Watch the video I did for Blog Action Day:

There are only 3 things I wanted to push this year in participation with Blog Action Day’09: 1, Let us demand for our leaders to participate actively on the December 6’s Copenhagen Summit and commit themselves for the benefit of the fellow men, 2, Climate Change is a topic that we don’t always see in the news, let education starts from us by means of sharing our ideas and opinions to others what’s the use of our blogs if we don’t give a space for this kind of social relevant topics, 3. And lastly, big things starts from small things let the change starts from us, lets actively participate in forums, in seminars, in tree planting and civic environmental events and more let the conservation and proper energy management starts from us and lets practice proper waste management. The battle on climate change doesn’t stop by blogging today, it doesn’t end at the Copenhagen, but it is just the beginning of our commitment with Mother Nature, to the Earth, the only earth where we are living.

    Pls do your homework.

Even if we talk and talk about Global Warming translated to Climate
change. We cannot do something about it anymore. Except to minimize people and countries from degrading and polluting the environment. THE DAMAGE IS THERE ALREADY. It will take years for us to switch into
oil based energy. The powerful countries of the world are the worse
polluter. Their factories emit tons of polluting gases into the atmosphere everyday. We have to cope with Climate change. It is like
we are all in Planet Earth Ship. We cannot jump out…

    • Hyden Toro says:

It should be: it will take years for us to get away from
oil based energy and into another kind of energy.

Exhaust from internal combustion engines like the cars, tricycles, etc…are also polluting the environment. The
Oil business with their multi million refineries will not
go away without a fight. Oil producing nations will not give
away their status as petro dollar rich. It is up to us. We can
all go down with our stupidity. Or really change in our ways
      and thinking.

    BBC asks what climate change???
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8299079.stm

While Benguet and La Union ask, where are our roads, metro-Manila wonders about rising deaths from leptospirosis, and Laguna wonders when the bay will be dredged.

    • Joe America says:

      UP n,

I just posted this to Rosa on another blog thread. It seems relevant here.

I caught a National Geographic program that deals with this phenomenon, global warming in concert with increasing ice. It is not in conflict. Ocean currents affect temperatures. Therefore, we have situations where the UK and Canada are on the same parallel, but one is moderate in temperature and the other is icy cold. So if currents change, it is consistent that some areas will get warmer as others get colder.

Here’s the pattern that appears to be developing: (1) global warming causes arctic ice to melt (the Arctic Ocean will be open to sea traffic in 10 years), (2) the melting fresh water is dumped into the salty oceans and causes ocean currents to slow, (3) the slowing currents throw us into another ice age.

Even this is just theory, but it is the most advanced understanding to date. Scientists are studying furiously to learn what is happening where, and what might happen and when. Prediction is the name of the game.

The one thing that is known is that the past 10,000 years has been unusually STABLE, climate-wise. So we can anticipate less stability.

So warmth or ice age, get ready . . . intense storms and changing micro-climates are almost certain.

For the Philippines, I’d say: Think about that food, and think about that population growth rate.

      Joe

  8. benign0 says:

Contributing to saving the environment can be as simple as changing our consumption habits:

Let us start with the not-often-highlighted dark side of the concept of “prosperity”. The amount of stuff people can ‘afford’ nowadays has grown. Take airfare, for example. In the past, frequent air travel used to be accessible only to relatively wealthy people. Now with budget airlines and all, even lower middle class people in advanced societies are able to take overseas holidays more than once a year, or fly for domestic travel instead of taking the roadtrips that used to be more of the norm in the past. Trouble is, aviation accounts for a disproportionately large amount of greenhouse gases added to the atmosphere annually. It delivers a bigger impact to the environment than land transport on a per passenger-kilometre basis.

  9. leytenian says:

OK…. let’s get to the reality of things…. This will be long but it is worth my time sharing…

There are only 3 things I wanted to push this year in participation with Blog Action Day’09:
1, Let us demand for our leaders to participate actively on the December 6’s Copenhagen Summit and commit themselves for the benefit of the fellow men,

That’s nice but why not demand NOW to implement REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9003 -ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT ACT OF 2000 This law has been legislated since 2000 and yet no public figure has taken responsibility. Imagine if this law has been implemented, the people could have been more smarter NOT small minded.

My suggestion for the smart people in Manila is to sue your local government officer for negligence. But one must understand the process of HOW to sue and you must have support from Lawyers who is truly for the people. Also support from your local honest businesspersons. As benigno said, ” papahiyain” . Regardless of the outcome of the suit, “win or lose” can be enough feedback to the TOP that the people have learned and is demanding Justice.

2, Climate Change is a topic that we don’t always see in the news, let education starts from us by means of sharing our ideas and opinions to others what’s the use of our blogs if we don’t give a space for this kind of social relevant topics,

As I have written from previous blog, there are many ways to change citizen’s environmental behaviour for long term sustainability. There’s a need for local facilities and strong policy to integrate environmental education into the curriculum of formal education. Children can be encouraged to be more involved in environmental work by different activities organised by schools. ( both bottom up and top down approach ). Republic ACT 9003 includes the Department of Education to implement. But what happened…. nasa wowowee ang lahat nang mga mahihirap…

    3. And lastly, big things starts from small things let the change starts from us, lets actively participate in forums, in seminars, in tree planting and civic environmental events and more let the conservation and proper energy management starts from us and lets practice proper waste management.

Demand from your barangay kapitan a list of things to do like zoning and flood zone area in your own community. Expand your mind and assess to see if your own community is a direct flood prone area or it may be the cause… Connect this concept to township, provincial and to the TOP. If your kapitan has no clue then he is negligent to the needs of his people he represent…. Sue him and replace… then next..

Blogging is not enough. Mang Juan cannot read and write…

  10. leytenian says:

Basic Law based on Statute, in this case… Republic Act 9003 is a statute that must be carried over by the different levels of government to prevent injury, risk of economic losses and many other negative consequences of nature.

Affirmative Duty based on Assumption of Duty. For example: Beavis , the great congressman were voted by small minded butthead. Regardless of butthead’s wrong decision to elect the wrong Bevis, Bevis cannot excuse himself from his DUTY. By statute, he voluntarily affirms to the law of the land…. therefore Bevis is liable to all harm suffered by the people thru his negligence or tortious ACT.

Intentional ACT: it means , it is done for the purpose or WITH KNOWLEDGE that Republic ACT exist. The existence of the ACT confirms REASONABLE CERTAINTY that a result will occur. Meaning , Bevis the congressman deliberately acted with AWARENESS of and CONSCIOUS DISREGARD for the almost certain risks created by his ACT…

I am hoping that blogs must include the RULE of LAW…

  11. apanfilo says:

Ultimately, all these environmental ills are due to humankind’s hubris. Not until we accept the notion that we are just guests, along with all other lifeforms, on this hospitable planet can we truly learn the humility that stewardship demands. Even our doomsday warnings about our destroying the planet betrays this hubris. Life on this planet has been around much longer than us and it will still be around long after we’re gone.

  12. Flow Galindez Flow says:

I suggest you watch the video where WWF and Greenpeace talks about the contribution of people on climate change simple lang ang issue ng climate change at yun ay kapabayaan ng mga tao, at ang patuloy nating pag ignore sa suliraning ito, watch the 15 minute video and it will answers your concerns

  13. Hyden Toro says:

Henry Ford developed the car. He also founded the Ford Motor Corporation at Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A. His original Model T car
was powered by Electric Motor. But, it did not sell well. So, they
developed the Internal Combustion Engine. That runs on gasoline. The
engines were intalled into the new models of cars. It sold well because of the sound. SOUND and SIGHT are good marketing tools.

Britain also discovered a lot of oil in the Middle East. The Middle
East then was a part of the British Empire. So, the Great Colonial Powers decided to have oil fossil based fuel as the primary source of energy. The oil lobby was also powerful in the U.S. Congress.Their economic agendas were pushed thru in the U.S.

Now, the Middle East is out of the colonial powers control. Oil is now used as a Political Weapon. It caused many wars, political instability and terrorism. Oil mixed with religious fundamentalism may ignite our Nuclear catastrophe.

  14. renin says:

Indeed, we should start the campaign within ourserlves. We can think of a number of ways to help mother earth, and of course ourselves too, but it shouldn’t stop there. We should ACT NOW.

  15. Edward says:
