Economists round the world predict a gloomy mood for the coming year 2009. The whole world is yet to feel the full brunt of global recession that is caused by the economic turmoil in the passing year 2008. The Philippines, ever reliant to its human exports will be hard hit by the incoming pall since it is expected that many foreign companies will be cutting down its workforce as an answer to the slowdown of businesses.
At the last quarter of 2008, many OFWs were removed from their jobs and are now going home or hiding as illegal migrant workers. More Filipinos will be going home next year and will face a Philippine economy with few jobs to offer.
The local scene also cast gloom over us all. The political showdowns quieted for the holiday season but as expected, it will be noisier and dirtier as many presidential aspirants will squabble over public opinions. Another thing is that our scheming president will craft plans that will be executed in the sidelines to keep her in power. So the Filipinos should expect more turmoil in the coming year amidst the tableau of poverty, hunger and destitute of the masses.
However, no matter how gloomy things are going to be, I expect that the Filipinos will still find things to be thankful for and celebrate the ending year and welcome the coming year with fireworks, feasts and reunions. And as a member of the Filipino people, I am also setting aside my problems and worries and celebrate this coming midnight with food and some firecrackers.
So, my dear friends let me greet you a “Happy New Year and may all of us have a meaningful and wonderful 365 days.” Celebrate, feast, and keep your hands intact so that you will be complete when the gloom of 2009 comes.
God bless to the Philippines. Let’s make this nation great once again.

Happy New Year Ishmael. Habito’s latest column in PDI gives some reason for optimism as it indicates that Filipinos still have the same resiliency that they have demonstrated back in 1983.
