Here’s something from Newsweek that’s complete unadulterated bullshit.
Newsweek magazine came out with a list of the 11 greediest people in history. They included Imelda Marcos.
Here’s what Newsweek said,
“She saw it as her duty to provide ‘some kind of light, a star’ for the impoverished Filipino people over whom her husband presided. So she took $5-million shopping sprees to New York and Rome, reportedly owned the world’s largest collections of gems and 3,000 pairs of shoes,” Newsweek said.
That qualifies Imelda?
Shit, just in the past 8 years of Bush…no… actually just in the no-bid contracts for Iraq, Afghanistan, and the War on Terror, just on the planeload of cash sent to Iraq that disappeared without a trace …the looting of the Iraq Museum… from Worldcom to Enron to AIG…Newsweek could have named a hundred greedy Americans who would have made Imelda look like Mother Theresa.
WTF? What about all those European monarchs who looted the world during the age of Christianization and colonization? Does Imelda own anything that would even qualify as a gatehouse in those European palaces?
Should we go on a country by country, era by era search of greedy people to prove that Newsweek’s Imelda bashing is unfounded and cheap? How about those Swiss bankers who allowed despots to open secret accounts and who stored treasures stolen from victims of the Holocaust?
During martial law, one of Newsweek’s top editors authored a coffee table book praising Imelda, just so you know who Newsweek is.
I don’t know why I’m so pissed, I stopped reading Newsweek and Time in the late sixties. But then again one keeps hearing people cite those news weeklies as if they were worth the paper they’re printed on.
I covered my dog’s shit with Newsweek and the beast bit me.

perhaps newsweek never heard of jose pidal before.
yes, agree, american greed caused all our present troubles in the world. time and newsweek are the dullards readers digest, he he.
Susmaryosep Manuel Buencamino!
” Does Imelda own anything that would even qualify as a gatehouse in those European palaces?”
Imeldefic was responsible for that Parthenonesque Film Palace that during its construction collapsed and buried construction workers. Now you may argue like all lawyers do that the Philippine State owns that accursed structure and not Mrs Marcos.
The Tudor Monarchs were responsible for Windsor Castle. The Hanoverians for Buckingham Palace. Now nobody can argue that Queen Elizabeth II owns these palaces. They belong to the Crown. But DOES THE WHOLE WORLD CONSIDER ELIZABETH II GREEDY, even if she had a lot of cash and pays taxes for her personal income?
Imeldific will never be able to shake off being Imeldific. And for that she has to face occupational hazards like Newsweek!
Blackshama,
Susmaryosep ka rin! All I’m saying is in historical terms Imelda for all the wrong she has done is small potatoes. She does not deserve to be placed in a list of the greediest people ever.
By the way are you telling me the English monarchs didn’t make tons of money off Africa, the Middle East, India, China, America, the Caribbean, and the slave trade?
most of it really is kabaduyan. I truly believe a lot of Filipinas are imeldific in nature given the chance, especially given an unfaithful husband.
” Does Imelda own anything that would even qualify as a gatehouse in those European palaces?”
I guess to qualify as ‘greedy’ one has to be involved in a grand conspiracy to be expose to the limelight preparatory to being accused and/or deposed. A revered monarch who’s not subjected to such conspiracy came out squeaky clean, but others were not so lucky so lost their heads instead.
Imelda might not be as greedy as the others mentioned by Ding but too much mud had been thrown at her, and she’s on the spotlight, therefore she’s a marked person in the crosshair of everybody’s sight.
Newsweek Magazine is on the decline so trying to regain lost glory.
Well, have to agree that she doesn’t deserve to be in that list.. there are far too many people greedier than her.. but well, as long as she’s on there, that should give her supporters yet another reason why they should just dump her as a ‘star’ and a ‘beacon of light’ and realize just what a failure she was and is.
Greed? I say, she’s got far worse traits than that.
Who was in power in the Philippines who had not been Greedy? Who
among our Politicians, if they look deeper in their consciences
have not been guilty of Greed? They were and are all Greedy.
As the Gecko guy of the “Wall Street” movie had said: ” For the lack of better term:” Greed is good. It works.”" This is the principle of Philippine politics always.
I stopped reading Newsweek 10 years ago. Is Madoff in the list?
Greedy is relative, like tithing. Usual tithing story from the church is this:
Which one giveth the most? A hungry parishioner who part his 1 peso? OR, a wealthy parishioner who part his 10 pesos?
Imelda is in that category. Filipinos are poor. Imelda has 1,000 shoes. Imelda closed down 42nd street so she can shop.
Greedy is relative. Greedy is not cousin to poor.
Newsweek is correct.
Having heard her response on TV, my respect for Imelda is never diminished. I didn’t realize how one can see the good side of a seemingly bad comeuppance. For that matter, Bongbong and Imee are mold from the same clay. They all deserve respect.
They came to be what and where they are now, thanks to Marcos’ centralized corruption.
Filipinos has attention deficit disorder and short memories.
Primer, especially.
Imelda Marcos was greedy. However, compared to those CEOs of American
corporations, and its politicians who at the same time own large
multinational companies. I think she is just like a “madurokot” of
Divisoria. Those CEOs are big time syndicate criminals. They robbed
the American public and the American government blind.
Who is Newsweek kidding?
They robbed the american public and have their taxpayers pay for it.
They call it Newsweeking next to Tweetering :)
imho, It’s not just the absolute figures which determine greed.
Yes, the American CEOs stole from the rich and poor alike. But – American CEOs didn’t stay in power for nearly two decades, they didn’t murder the stockholders who questioned their policies, they didn’t fill the auto companies with cronies and relatives.
Imelda, on the other hand, stole from the poor and the poorest of the poor, from the loans made in behalf of the poor, and murdered all those who got in her way.
She wasn’t only greedy, but murderously greedy.
Visions of Annabelle Rama flashed in my head. Pwede!
The Despotic Queen of Shoes couldn’t agree more…not to mention that the only two women on that list were Asian and you know white women are greedier! This is nothing more than a cheap pot shot at a sitting duck and just months away from my 80th B’day…quell horror!
White women are greedier????? Wow… so profound and racist BS
