Jejemon Versus Philippine Politics and The Runup To Election Day

Okay, I tried to resist the Jejemon phenomenon, I know very little about it, and yet it’s everywhere these days. Mainstream is probably way behind regarding this stupid little lifestyle, but so am I.

According to Urban Dictionary, a non official definition is:

Usually seen around social networking sites such as Friendster and Multiply, jejemons are individuals who spread around their idiocy on the web by tYpFing LyK diZS jejejeje, making all people viewing their profile raise their eyebrows out of annoyance.

The main thing to emphasize though is how its online presence seems to be more these days than even our very own May 2010 elections. That’s really the point of this post. Why in the world has the elections taken such a back seat, and interest in Jejemons spiked up? Actually, over at plurk, someone shared that among search terms in The Philippines, the elections doesn’t even come in the top 10. That’s pretty surprising and a bit worrisome. Although, I know that it seems that more people are more engaged in this election, I don’t really have the numbers to justify that assertion.

In any case, it was just tweeted that even Jejemon has risen to the number 2 spot yesterday in Yahoo search results. Again, worrisome if ever we were lead to believe that there should be more interest in our elections than some jologs phenomenon that is Jejemon.

It’s fun to criticize or laugh at, but for people on the ground, the volunteers, and even the candidates, it’s a sign that this is the reason why many rallies pander rather than educate and elevate the electoral discussion. But if we are to go by online interest, even in search results, we can’t deny the fact, that for many Filipinos in search of “knowledge”, showbiz and a few nonsense topics like Jejemons are still at the top of the heap. Reality, I’m afraid.

Even Gibo, clearly being lighthearted, may actually have grounds to even take the following in a lighthearted gesture..

As far as I am concerned, it’s not just about Jejemons, showbiz, and this elections. Even it weren’t election time, such interests do not dissipate, and the issues of the day will rarely ever get the mainstream appeal that it deserves. Sadly, as I have always observed, only in great tragedies and upheaval, and/or national disturbance are we really able to focus on what truly matters. Again, reality, I’m afraid.

Idiocy or not…It’s Freedom of Speech…If you remove this Freedom. You will give a great disservice to people to voice their opinions. Besides, who are you to Judge who has the right opinion or not? Are you a self proclaimed judge?

It’s up to you if you believe a person or not. Are not our Politicians mostly Idiots. Then, you vote for them.

  3. The Equalizer says:

if you believe what other people say or blog…then you are a sucker. Use your brain, before you believe waht is written here…Many politicians are hooking you with stories…

    • The Equalizer says:

Opinions are opinions. If you don’t agree. Don’t call the other person names. Because they are supposed to have Idiotic opinions. Look at a fellow named Babbage. Who made it possible for the invention of the Computer which you are using now…People thought he had Idiotic ideas. He was only advanced in his thinking. Where other people cannot comprehend and see his marvelous ideas of a revolutionary invention…Or have you read Rizal’s novel “Noli Me Tangere”. There is a Character there called: “Pilosopong Tasio”. The Character was advanced in his thinking, during his time. This is the reason he was called: “Pilosopong Tasio”!

napag iwanan na ako ng panahon, i’m totally innocent what this jejemon is. kamot ulo muna, sorry, nick.

    • Nick says:

yes, bert, don’t bother, I’m actually glad someone doesn’t understand or doesn’t even want to know.. stick to the elections, I’m glad you are..

      • Murdock says:

padagdag pa po, some forum sites block or ban users using the methods jejemons used to type and promoting correction of grammar and spelling in the world wide web.

my observation: the typing style used by jejemons probably evolved from l33t or hacker’s language being used by SMS addicts or Class D and E society to show-off probably.

  5. Louie says:

tama, mas inaatupag pa nila yang jejemons na yan kesa sa mga ngyayari sa bansa ntin eh.

  6. Kiko says:

maybe some of them are tired of hearing the politician’s promises that keeps getting broken,,,,thats why most of us today spends more time surfing the net rather than hearing/seeing the politician’s voices and ads in the television….though its kind of irritating to read/hear about jejemons and their own language….who knows maybe its deja vu ^_^
