Martial Law Watch

Global Source, a reputable  US-based organization, said in its March 5 report ” Down the Wire” written by former Erap Undersecretary for Finance Romy Bernardo and economist Margarita Gonzales that the temptation to declare such a draconian measure as Martial Law remains an option for those who support the present dispensation.

If, and when, this administration do declare martial rule, I believe they’ll have to do it either in the second quarter of this year, or worst, before the formal filing of certificates of candidacies which will fall on November 30. Absent any genuine destabilizing agent, they may have to create a pseudo-revolutionary group that they may tap to launch a “prato-coup” and squelch it, ergo, justified martial rule imposition.

Or, they might do some of these things to justify the imposition of martial law.

1. Worsen military presence in Jolo to force the JI-backed ABU SAYYAF to kill all their foreign hostages. Or, create a scenario where the State’s security forces would over run MILF camps and intensify low-intensity conflicts in insurgent areas in Mindanao.

2. Intensify anti-Communist campaigns not just in the red areas but also in white areas.

3. Create a temporary breakdown of law and order in the Metropolitan areas by hosting high-profile murders and assassinations of celebrities, government and police officials.

4. Create an “ambush-me” scenario involving high-profile and key government officials. (Some say, let it be the First Gentleman. Yet, he’s so paranoid, he’ll not agree on such a scenario)

5. Place the poster girl in a precarious situation, then, launch an alleged assasination attempt, thereby causing a State of National Emergency leading to martial rule.

Are all these plausible?

  1. Really, Manong Pat?

I’ll look for it but would you be kind enough to give as a link?

    This is a poser.

  2. GabbyD says:

yes, please. a link. love to read this analysis also.

  3. Was just at the web site. It appears one has to be a subscriber :(

  4. cocoy says:

  6. Never Again!

  7. The Equalizer,

Well…we’re so weak at this point that if Arroyo moves, we will definitely be overun.

  8. DJB says:

C’mon Pat. Didn’t you hear what Brother Barack said about the Clenched Fists of Corruption? Besides that’s too close to the election and if you read your 1987, you will see that Martial Law is not what it used to be. It’s been defanged. I think you are just spoiling for a fight with GMA hoping for a knockout punch before her term ends. No way. She is gonna survive to the end, if I were a betting man. The real challenge really is how to prosecute her after she leaves office. Now there is a poser.

  9. djb,

well, the report of the Global Source is pretty scary, yet, the plausibility is there. As what Manong Ernie used to say, anything goes for this regime. For as long as they get what they want.

Personally, I would want a fight before she leaves. Prosecution after 2010? I doubt if it ever will happen.

  10. “To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.”Barack Obama

Do you think she can get the tacit support of the U.S. for a martial law move (a la’ Marcos)?

  11. No.

  12. Primer C. Pagunuran karlpopper says:

The next AFP Chief of Staff is GMA’s former head of the Presidential Security Group in Malacanang.

If GMA wants martial law, there she has it.

  13. GabbyD says:

    this is a huge accusation:

“3. Create a temporary breakdown of law and order in the Metropolitan areas by hosting high-profile murders and assassinations of celebrities, government and police officials.”

    essentially, state sponsored terror/murder.

do these people have ANY proof?

  14. Primer C. Pagunuran karlpopper says:

Well, let us just watch if the chips will fall in place.

But I guess, martial law is self-defeating – people don’t like it.

  15. cocoy says:

But I guess, martial law is self-defeating – people don’t like it.

if you asked me a few years back, i might agree but do you remember that EO thing awhile back? Right now, i’m not so sure if Filipinos won’t just roll over and play dead.

remember that time when they arrested Randy David? i forget what it was called back then, but that was Martial Law in all but name wasn’t it?

i’m not sure if that time Trillianes held up Manila Pen, if there was a curfew raised.

What did people do in those instances again?

  16. Juwan_D says:

    Pat,

    you really are desperate hehehehe

    have fun my friend hehehe

  17. Juwan_D says:

Pat, martial law is what the opposition wanted to happen…because its the only way Filipinos will come out and fight. IT will be the end of GMA once she declares martial law…and thats what you need to realize your so fantasized “revolution”…hehehehe

  18. Juwan_D says:

and you people would want to risk the lives of every Filipino by pushing GMA to declare martial law…just so you can satisfy you own thirst!!!!

You people are no different than the NPA…they wont mind closing the country even if it means that 80% of the population will din starving.

Pat, I wish I can show you here “THE FINGER”..hehehe

  19. Primer C. Pagunuran karlpopper says:

When Randy was arrested, it translated as the first classic instance that challenged that EO issued by GMA.

On the other hand, when Trillanes held up Manila Pen, it was read as a clear and present danger to the very life of the Arroyo regime – its legitimacy having been challenged.

In either case, GMA and her official acts are put to test except that in both cases, the lady always get the upperhand and everyone less than a president always gets the shorter end of the bargain.

Clearly, Randy stood by what he believes in and Trillanes on the other hand along with his co-coup plotters caved in. In the end that Magdalo leader and his men are nothing but a bunch of cowards.

It took a lady student leader to show us what principled cause really means. Remember that girl?

  20. Timoteo Kulog says:

We should not be having scenarios in our minds.
It is a worst case scenario. But, anybody toying
with the idea is a Dumb Politician. Times have
changed. The mindset of most Filipinos have changed. We are in the instant communication technology era, and globalized age already.

It is hard to control information in this era. Not
unlike during the Marcos era. They just controlled
the Press and information. Put a Propaganda paper
or information to the public themselves.

It will be a foolish gamble for anyone contemplating it. You dont take a hammer and
bash it on your head, do you ? Besides, who wants
to be in this awaful job of Philippine
    Presidency ?
