Last night here at FV and over At Midfield, this writer reported how MNLF founder announced that “unilaterally” he was building up an MNLF “Mindanao Security Command” with a mandate to ensure that Mindanao can live in peace and fully develop the potentials of the South.
This morning apart from that statement, Misuari, who founded that MNLF in the aftermath of the infamous Jabidah massacre (the 1968 incident in Corregidor where 68 Muslim militia trainees were killed after a botched incursion into Malaysia), is quoted as saying the MNLF will take over the governance of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao in three years.
“As soon as we succeed in our high-level peace talks, tripartite peace talks, then we will resume our governance of ARMM, the autonomous region.”
The present ARMM officials will be allowed to govern “for the next three years as an enclave within the larger autonomy. For only three years because that was the agreement in Jakarta,” Misuari reportedly told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The report goes on to say, The MNLF would “allow ARMM to consume, so speak, its tenure then the genuine Bangsamoro autonomy will come to life.”
- What is Misuari up to?
- Is is ‘Mindanao Security Command’ a boast or a promise’ that could very well constitute a third force in the ongoing Mindanao conflict or assume a different ‘mandate’ from Nur if he does not what he wants?
There is silence from Malacanang on this developing story but this bears close, very close, watching.

Remember the MILF simply splintered from the MNLF when the late Salamat Hashim tangled with Misuari, with the MILF getting Malaysia as benefactor after Misuari’s ‘fall from grace’ over widely talked about fiscal issues.
We must ask ourselves, apart from the suspected diversion of foreign development aids coursed through the Bangsamoro Development Agency, where does the MILF’s de facto standing army, complete with RPGs, mortars, 50-caliber machine guns and the latest long arms get its war materiel?
Libya no longer plays that game in this part of the world, at the moment.
