(UPDATED) Heaven wept as the Filipino nation buried Corazon Aquino, mother of modern Philippine democracy. As the rain fell, and amidst the chant of “Cory, Cory, Cory!” Filipinos remembered an imperfect time when our president at least had a sense of decency, of propriety, of delicadeza. Perhaps, it is this nostalgia where the call for either Noynoy or Kris Aquino to pickup where their parents left off comes from:
Perhaps, this nostalgia for a cleaner time is even more palpable coming off the heels of Arroyo’s eating habit in America.
Filipinos and Aquino scion have something in common: they can’t have a break.
At times, it might seem to be that the political landscape is no better today than it was pre-EDSA. People, heartbroken have no one to believe in. Time and time again, our politicians have squandered opportunity after opportunity to raise the quality of living; to raise our people to be better than who they are now. Presidential priorities amidst our brave men in uniform’s sacrifices, being what they are. Why not lease aircraft, instead of buying it, as @LaTteX on Twitter, yesterday put it? Why not really arm our brave soldiers well? Why not answer the question of Mindanao?
Like this series of tweets from @caffeinesparks and @LaTtEX discussing Arroyo’s “need” for a new plane (read it from the bottom up:

The reality is that the State of the Filipino Nation is such that the government, even if it wanted to, can’t ensure continuous growth. The modest growth of the Filipino nation isn’t sustainable. Bloomberg recently quoted Roberto Tan on the Philippines’ plan to sell $2 Billion of dollar and yen debt to fund the country’s budget deficit:
“We have a lot of funding options available to us given that the emerging borrowing for next year is lower,” Tan said by telephone from Davao City, in southern Philippines. “We can pre-fund part of next year’s requirement by selling samurai bonds before year-end. Global bonds and official development loans are always there.”
The $167 billion Southeast Asian economy is set for a record budget deficit this year and a shortfall in 2010 would be the 13th in a row. A slowing economy and lower tax revenue have prompted the government to issue more debt. The Philippines raised $750 million last month by selling U.S. currency bonds, adding to $2.25 billion sold earlier in the year.
“We can do the samurai this year or next year,” Tan said. “There’s no rush.” The Philippines is in talks with 10 banks to sell yen-denominated debt in Japan, he said.
Post Aquino burial, the camp that belongs to Erap Estrada is viewed no better than the camp of Gloria Arroyo. Bitterly, our people still lump them together. It explains why no one wants another people power ever again. Give power to either group and they’ll do the same old thing. The odd thing though, an election in spite of having the same names and faces is still seen as a method to kick politicians out and ushering in a different set. Trouble is, the maxim of garbage in, garbage out works too for elections and not just people power.
Take Manny Villar asking veteran WowWowee host Willie Revelame to become a senator under his party is a classic Filipino politician move. Willie, for the little good and little entertainment he gives is, unknowingly, the poster boy of what a Filipino politician is, as viewed by ordinary Filipinos.
We certainly can’t disagree that Villar’s record in the senate showed he was for “An Act to Institute the Policies on the Suppression of Trafficking in Filipino Women; And to Establish a HIgher Standard of Protection and Rehabilitation of Victims Of Trafficking, Sexual Servitude, and Exploitation Including Commercialized Transnational Marriages, and Migration for Entertainment, Providing Stiffer Penalties for Its Violations and For Other Purposes” as well as “An Act Establishing the Office of Research on Women’s Health,” an “Act Creating National Women’s Business Enterprises Policy and Prescribing Arrangements for Developing, Coordinating and Implementing a National Program for Women’s Enterprise”. Among a long laundry list that his website published.
How about these tweets published during Cory Aquino’s funeral? Do they give you pause about another candidate?
Whether or not you spew indignation, Mar Roxas is for Free of Information Act (SB 109). He was also primary author of an amendment to the Magna Carta for MSMES through Senate Bill 1646.
I wrote about why Escudero shouldn’t be president here, and you can see the quality of his mind here as he asked about how to solve Metro Manila traffic.
Make no mistake, Escudero intends to run. Hearty’s Haven posted her Meet & Greet: Chiz Escudero and the Senator’s reply when asked if he was running. Escudero unequivocally said he would run:
Do you plan & want to run for presidency?
Yes. I want and plan to run for presidency. I have not submitted my application yet but I intend to do so. If I lose the election, I plan to quit politics altogether, that is my promise to my wife.
What has Escudero done in his years in the Senate? His sponsored bills passed into law include “An Act Increasing the Maximum deposit Insurance Coverage, and Strengthening the Regulatory and Administrative Authority, and Financial Capability of the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC),” and his filled bills pending in committee is substantial in quantity.
Are the antics of Villar, Roxas and Escudero (and by extension, every other politician) for the unwashed masses? That this is the only for them to be voted?
Anyone who has lost a parent knows the ache never really goes away. How much more difficult is the battle to overcome grief when your parents are as loved as Ninoy and Cory?
Who would answer? Kris Aquino-Yap had always struck everyone as straight-forward, frank. Though Mrs. Aquino-Yap’s bubbly nature had many to dismiss her. We joke that at least a Kris Aquino State of the Nation wouldn’t be boring, that at least we could look forward to candid interviews of the President by entertainment show, The Buzz. Maybe Boy Abunda would assume the post of Executive Secretary. Just as we underestimate Erap, I don’t think Kris is as “shallow and stupid” as people chalk her to be. Rating her “star power” is obvious. What “dirt” is there to pull from her that hasn’t already made into light? Her life already an open book and if she dared mount a campaign, it will be a juggernaut, hard pressed to be defeated. That’s all on her own, without adding her family legacy.
Noynoy Aquino is being called to step up. Quiet and unassuming, the senator has his resume on his site, citing the laws he authored and sponsored. Senator Aquino’s platform continues the legacy of his parents:
“I am determined to continue the fight started by my father and my mother to see that democracy takes root and is strengthened in our country. This cannot happen in a government that serves the interest of the powerful few. We must strengthen the institutions of government so that they truly serve the interests of our people.”
In the light of attempts to weaken our democracy, I therefore stand to;
1. Strengthen the Senate as an independent branch of government;
2. Continue to hold government to account for its excesses and misgovernance;
3. Resist Charter Change if done to serve the selfish interests of the few and if the process circumvents that prescribed by the constitution;
4. Oppose all attempts to impose a repressive government, and more importantly; and
5. Be the voice of the powerless and the oppressed, those who do not have access to our government and are, thus, victims of injustice.
The Aquino scion’s best trait is a lack of interest in power. In a nation of power hungry politicians that is like a cool gentle rain amidst a dry open desert. That and their legacy is most potent now is the best opportunity for one of them to ascend. Perhaps it isn’t the most opportune time and perhaps in a larger sense, shouldn’t the Filipino stop drafting the Aquino Family for another tour? Has the Filipino asked enough of them?
“The Filipino is worth dying for,” is the Aquino Family motto. The clear and present danger for any Aquino scion is the same trap that their mother fell into. Filipinos expected Cory to do all the work for us. The Filipino has not integrated in his DNA that the Permanent Revolution of People Power is an endless opportunity for self-discovery and redemption. An Aquino back at the palace, more so than any politician raises the expectation for that Aquino to fix this broken nation by themselves, even higher. In the event that Gloria Arroyo would arrogantly pursue extending her term of office through extreme means, the door will open wider for an Aquino to step up. If that day should come, will one of them heed the call?
There is much uncertainty on the road to 2010. The Palace’s unrelenting attempt at keeping power is a threat whether it is through constitutional amendments via constitutional assembly or extreme ways like emergency rule. The lack of a candidate who is sincere and capable is another. More than that, the Filipino expectation that their leader is a messiah is as valid a concern today, as it was when Cory was president; when Marcos was dictator. How else can we expect to explain the Filipino’s disappointment towards their leaders? In such an environment, how can there be a permanent revolution of people power? How then do we explain that all leaders are but human?

2. I took screenshots of @LaTtEX and @cafeinesparks tweets from my tweetdeck.
3. My profuse thanks to the awesome @brevity for the use of her Mar Roxas photos.

3. i do not own the images on that scribd of Mar Roxas tweets. My ambivalence to use the tweets stem from question of image ownership. I don’t know who owns either. I sent an @ tweet to @brevity for permission, if she owned it.

That said, I decided to quote it in its entirety. I use the following reasons:
a) The image is a fact.
Lawyer Brock Shinen’s article “Twitterlogical, The Misunderstanding of Ownership” focuses on a salient point: facts are not copyrightable. And facts are what tweets are mostly about – from talking about the weather, to communicating what one had for dinner the night before, to complaining about the morning traffic. Whether one expresses them in a funny or unique way does not make a difference. Yes, one can potentially protect a particular expression of a fact, but one cannot then prevent other people from writing about the same fact.
from here.
b) the image is in by no means used in any commercial manner. There is no advertising on Filipino Voices (at the time of this post).
c) a retweet is a social contract that allows the twitter to spread the said tweet and that by tweeting it, the original twitter has given his followers the right to distribute with proper attribution. I am quoting the tweet in its entirety, including all the RTs.
If you are the owner of the said images and would like me to take it down or include a more direct citation, please feel free to direct message or @ reply me on twitter, and I shall oblige.

A candidate who has the combined positive traits of all our past presidents, including Gloria if she has any, minus their negative ones might get himself elected, but it is also very unlikely of him to succeed in giving us any relief.
To me what would matter most is his tract record and plans for the county. Worth looking into is the platform of Mayor Jejoar Binay. Let the local governments carry the central government, not the other way around. A pyramid form is more stable that an inverted one.
A nation freed from Gloria’s barbarity is relief enough.
but what if we are going to exchange the devil we know, for the devil we don’t know? Which clearly happened with EDSA-2?
Cocoy,
I agree. Ours is essentially a leadership problem. I’ll go for Noynoy if he gets Randy David in his cabinet.
“I’ll go for Noynoy if he gets Randy David in his cabinet.” – tranquil
Wow! That’s an exciting proposition.
We’ve heard it before. A nation freed from Marcos’ atrocities is relief enough. So, what happened?
Binay’d be worth considering if only he weren’t Erap’s unquestioning servant. But I do like the way Makati is run.
Mayor Jejomar Binay is very close to the Aquinos. If Noynoy will finally decide to run for president, Binay might probably withdraw his presidential aspiration.
Binay’s track record is very impressive indeed. If he gives way to Noynoy (because Nonoy is more winnable than him), he can still be of great help to the nation by being a member of Nonoy’s cabinet if Noynoy wins. With Randy David and Jejomar Binay as among Noynoy’s cabinet members, that makes for an even more exciting proposition.
It will be a big reconciliation if Erap (or whoever is his group is planning to anoint) would withdraw his plan for presidency and instead support Noynoy if Noynoy will decide to run for president. If they both run, there is a big probability that none of them will make it because the people’s votes will be divided between the two of them.
Binay has a mind of his own. He is closer to Ninoy than to ERAP. What counts is his idea. If he can’t push it through as President, he can do it as Noynoy’s DILG Seretary. Pardon my obsession with LG’s, I’ll root for anyone who understands why.
Our government is floundering. A few good men can’t stop it from sinking. Given ample powers, local governments could. Self-reliant LGU’s makes for a self-reliant Republic.
Don’t forget Chiz’ campaign slogan — all I need for good blood circulation : Circulan!
Presidents have their perks. But, they cannot understand and differentiate them from: abuse, insensetivity and just plain stupidity.
Sure, you have to eat while on Presidential mission. But, to have
large entourage; and order expensive menus and wines are another
thing. Soon, they will not have enough people to accept to have paid their sumptous dinners.
We cannot still get out from the Politics of Personalities. It is
the Traditional Politician: like Manny Villar; who wants to continue
the political culture. He wants to draft Wowoowee Revillame.
Manny Villar refuses to talk to Public Forums. Is he hiding something? Or, he cannot just face the issues? We want candidates
who can Debate, Deliberate and Discuss the present issues affecting
our lives. You have seen those candidates who had done it.
We the voters are the Buyers of Services. If a Merchant (Candidate) refuses to describe and show his merchandise. Then, his goods are not worth buying.
That’s why I wanted to know more about what bills they sponsored/passed. Villar is for women’s rights, but he strikes me as a conservative.
Roxas is more liberal and Escudero is, i actually don’t know where he stands. his pending bills is a laundry list of house keeping stuff for the judiciary.
The politics of personality is there because these guys want to play up to the masses. All they need is their votes. The candidates and their staff themselves chooses to be silent on salient issues. They wont discuss substantive issues simply because it won’t earn them votes. At least they think they wont.
Maybe Wowowee advances women’s rights. That is why Villar wants Willie in the Senate.
Joe
Wowowee upholds Luningning’s and Saicy’s right to shake them booties when kids watch at noontime.
To backtrack a bit, all these three no exception – Escudero, Roxas, Villar – graduated 3 full terms in the House of Representatives – equivalent, matter-of-factly to all of 9 years which should be good enough time to enable them to pursue whatever vision or dream they really have for our country and our people.
Why? If only because the government has spent, in each of these three – Chiz, Mar, Manny – at least a whooping P630 million in congressional funds not to mention their monthly allowances of P200,000 and a monthly salary of P35,000.
Can any of these 3 honestly account for all these monies?
If they can, that should be the same basis for the voting public on how they would decide on who to vote into the presidency.
Failing on that, all their TV blurbs to which they pay awesome amounts of money for advertising must have come from their patrons who would invest in exchange of being the next president’s most favored client.
The vicious cycles of patronage politics are dramatically and graphically illustrated by the way these 3 stooges run their campaign gimmicks.
Cory Aquino is the symbol of the People Power. She has some failings
also like any other Politicians. Her son,may not turn out as acceptable, as the mother to the Filipino People . The family is a rich family. So, they have their perks also.
What we are looking now is Good Leadership. Leave out your EMOTIONS.
Use your good judgement of who to vote for the next leader…
The original title for this post was “should the nation draft an Aquino for 2010?” and it would have revolved around the thesis that it would be better if the nation left the Aquino family alone.
In this post, I spoke of clear dangers of an another Aquino presidency. It wouldn’t be because an Aquino would want to stay in power but because people will expect that Aquino, whether they do so consciously or not, to “save” the nation. More so than Villar, Roxas or Escudero or any other candidate. I think that’s a huge mistake.
If you put too much hope to a mere mortal man. You
will surely be disappointed. The Problems of the nation
are: political, social, cultural, lack of good leaders,
corruption, political patronage of all kinds, etc…
Look at the political dynasties that sprung out like
weeds thruout the political landscape. They prevent
good leaders from coming out.
How can Sen. Aquino solve this? He himself comes from a
political dynasty from Tarlac. Blessed are those
who do not put hope on one man. They will not be
disappointed.
let me go on record here that i support manny villar as our next president. noli de castro is a strong alternative. with a right set of advisers and implementors (who are not beholden to any interest group, including “kamag-anak, inc.), either one should do very, very well indeed.
btw, let kris do her thing in showbiz. noynoy has been tried and found wanting. a vote for any of them would be a continuation of the quagmire that we are in. adulating them in the name of the questionable “heroism” of their parents is as bone-headed as many things in pinoy politics can be.
Bencard,
Going through the candidates’ sites and reading their record was an eye opener. I disliked greatly how Villar takes great pain to make himself be more for the masses. His commercial on television was a good sign of it. I hate it when he wants Willie on his team, which is an obvious move to get the popular masses. It made me wonder: who is manny villar and why should i vote for him.
I learned one thing though: he’s more prolific than Roxas or Escudero as a lawmaker. Whether or not those laws made sense or are yielding positive impact, I’ll still try to find out for myself going to the election.
Is Manny Villar going to be a good president, based on his track record? I don’t know yet.
cocoy, villar has to get as much votes as he could possibly have from all segments of society, yes including the masses, to become president. what’s wrong with courting them? as you said, villar has a strong track record in both houses of the legislature. he was an effective speaker and senate president. he has shown a rare ability to compromise and to make opposing groups meet each other half-way for the common good. he may not be as flamboyant as the old timers like enrile, pimentel, or defensor but neither is he as annoyingly vociferous as some of the greenhorn senators. manny villar is a winner in business, largely raising himself up by his own bootstraps. i strongly believe he will be able to build on the gains achieved by the arroyo presidency in a way that none of the other aspirants can.
The overwhelming outpouring of respect for Cory maybe interpreted by her critics as adulation, and by considering it as such only acknowledges the fact that Cory is being admired by the filipino people intensely.
Critics of Cory would only do a disfavor to the candidacy of Manny Villar (or any other presidential candidate they may be supporting) if they continue to undermine the people’s respect for Cory. Willie Revillame unintentionally did it and it cost him dearly.
Nonoy may have been tried and found inadequate, but perhaps only according to the standards of his critics (or his parents’ critics). Noynoy maybe “inadequate”, but who is truly adequate to shoulder all the problems of our country?
[National] leadership is a team work. If leaders of other countries surround themselves with a set of good and competent people to help them govern, the Philippines is not short of such kind of people who can help Noynoy.
Pinas not short of good and competent people, but the most likely is that Noynoy or whoever wins will pick from his circle. This means that the people around them — the business-, military- and economic advisers that surround them — should also be evaluated while the presidentiable is being evaluated. Remember — GMA has a PhD Economics and knows the internal workings of government. Is she who Fernando will bring in as one of his advisers? Are any of the candidates echoing the economic viewpoints of Virata or Jobo Fernandez?
there’s a humongous difference between “respect” and “adulation”. i may respect her but, in my book, she is not a hero much less a “saint”. manny villar will not be defined by people like me who want to vote for him. his qualities as candidate stand by themselves. why should they be affected by how i view cory?
btw, a leader cannot just rely on “competent” people to help him every step of the way. he has to have a modicum of ability to make correct judgment. i just don’t think noynoy has the requisite gravitas to be the chief leader of my homeland. his handling of the state funeral rejection brouhaha sure did not mitigate my misgivings.
“…in my book, she is not a hero much less a ‘saint’.” — bencard
In your book she may not be a hero, but it can’t be denied that in so many people’s hearts she is that others even revered her as saint.
“Manny villar will not be defined by people like me who want to vote for him.” — bencard
Maybe it’s right or maybe it’s not. Or maybe stating that “Noynoy has been tried and found wanting” will make voters vote for Manny Villar.
“…with a right set of advisers and implementors” — bencard
“A leader cannot just rely on ‘competent’ people to help him every step of the way..” — bencard
Who said “every step of the way”? The operative phrase used was “help govern”.
“There’s a humongous difference between ‘respect’ and ‘adulation’…” – bencard
Of course there is indeed a big difference between “respect” and “adulation”. When one does not agree with the very high respect that the rest of the people give to someone, he may call it “adulation”.
Cocoy,
I thought this was no longer necessary, but I have to say this.
If it sounds defensive, maybe because it is.
Since I was one(maybe not the only one) who mentioned citation of images and tweets….
when I said I appreciate, i meant that as in a good way as in I appreciate it.In other words I liked it when you take pains to put citations.
Not in a bad way like I appreciate if you would do this or do that.
just getting that out of my chest.
thanks karl. well i agree with you that it is something all bloggers ought to be doing anyway. happy to do it and i don’t want to trample on anyone’s toes. blogging for me is all for fun. cheers!
Cheers, right back at you! :)
Since its a draw your own conclusion blog.
For track record
it does not help Chiz
what he said in that interview will also not help him even if it was tongue hardly pressed to cheek.(if that interview is disseminated beyond the internet and by word of mouth)
Track records would help Mar and Manny
they both have significant bills passsed and debated upon.
if it is a question of closeness to masa between the two, I think manny has the track record.
If mar had the track record regarding his approachability, he would not have to do all the stuff that he is doing.
Lastly delicadeza and ethics is in the lost and found section, as to who will redeem it, Will that be the question?
I’m pretty sure, based on my posts you guys could conclude I don’t like Escudero or Roxas very much.
My impression of Escudero is that he is just going through the motions. He’s running to get over people’s expectations. He doesn’t have fire in his belly.
Roxas surprised me more than Villar when I was reading his record. Not as “prolific” as Villar, but I like the fact that he is sponsoring/authoring a Free Information Act. If that bill ever sees the light of day, I hope very much it is like the US version.
Like Villar, I then wondered if Roxas acts the way he does simply to cultivate votes of the masses.
As for Villar, I gave Bencard my thoughts.
Maybe I expect a lot more from Escudero and Roxas. That expectation is that they got this unique opportunity to be great. Maybe, that expectation is too high or impossible.
Will Roxas be a good president? I don’t know yet. Will Escudero? I lean towards, “no”, but there is always redemption.
I am still undecided.
Thanks Cocoy for the exchange of notes.

About the plane,hmmm
if it was not debated upon in front of the public before passing the budget, that would be really effingA.
if it will be for the next admin chances are the “Air force One” would also be approved during the last few months of the term, beacause it will be “rejected” for the first five years then a “sige na nga” will happen in the final year.
As to the merits of a fleet lease ,even in the corporate world the fleet lease of equipment in general and computers in particular was good in paper, to lease computers only until you need it, and it goes with the package of available upgrades, but eventually fleet leases becomes a lease to own deals, because that is always an option.
Since appropriations is more often than not by installment(ammortizations), it already appears that what ever asset that is, is being leased to own.If you lease it from CebuPac or Pal, sila naman ang nabawasan. Not that they would buy extra planes just for leasing.
Villar is embodying patronage politics.
Is this the right time and place to endorse our own choice of president? Pray tell.
How about the ‘arsonists’?
From where I stand, I go for BAYANI FERNANDO – now and beyond.
I find him very intelligent in the last Senate hearing deliberating on this advertising expenses incurred by cabinet secretaries. Clearly, he gave the most enlightened justification why, in the case of the MMDA, it must be the chairman himself whose face and words should be shown.
If miracles happen, I feel that one is forthcoming. Let BF win this time as the next president of the Republic of the Philippines. Other justifications stood on the ground as mute witness in perpetuity and prosperity.
How I wish people see more from the smokescreen of ‘vicious advertising’.
BF also has the most sensible infomercial. The best man in the Senate may not be the best choice for the Presidency. The Senate makes laws. The President implements them, supposefdly.
WOULDN’T IT BE NICE if the only names on the ballot-box for May2010-president are the incorruptible?
Pinas has been torn apart by corruption at the presidential levels — this tells me that there should be intense effort to vet the candidates along their corruptibility. This means muckraking. Let people know even the mild-only like a candidate having interceded for a friend to avoid taxes on a smuggled car. Let people know even the mild-only like San Miguel Beer contributing cases of beer for the candidates birthday party. And definitely, air out if the candidate was financial beneficiary of a bill he/she sponsored or if the candidate (while a young mayor or councilor) had accepted a $5,000-or-more bribe.
Forgiving a sin is for entry into heaven, not entry into Malacanang.
UP n grad, are you for a NO-EL? You just crossed-out all wannabes. Hehehe.
Villar will hire BF to be his administrator. :)
upn, it seems, the way it is now, for entry into malacanan, forgiving a sin is not only possible, it’s a certainty if the price is right. there would be no seller if there’s no buyer, and vice versa.

uhhhm…… other than a brand name aquino what else are we signing up for?
a platform of more oligarchs and dynasties?
I asked the same thing here: “Is a vote for Noynoy, a Vote against Arroyo’s Brand of Politics?”.
or is a vote for Noynoy, an oligarch – against Arroyo, another oligarch – a vote for the people bamboozled by oligarchs :)
as an oligarch would say.. voters’ obliviousness.. priceless!
I’m definitely against the kind of politics where family members believe that a certain government position is for theirs to keep for generations. That’s the brand of politics which holds us back for decades. Are the Aquinos exempted? Do they believe they have the monopoly of talent like what the Arroyos think of themselves? I believe not. In Cory’s family, nobody aspired and lusted for power for their own ends. They didn’t even used their position to get enrich themselves, their simple, humble and private citizens. The same can be said of Noynoy, a like all Filipinos, is called to serve, not to be served unlike the other presidentiables who invests billions of pesos, expecting returns with huge interests
My Bet is sen. Villar – with leadership qualities, charisma, and management abilities. only fallback masyadong business minded to.
Si Se. Noynoy poor performance, walang charisma, leadership, at first lady. the only good thing eh anak sya nina late Mr&Mrs Aquino. mas maaliw pa tayo ke Kris. Si sen. Chiz, masydong chizzy, sa lip service lang magaling, sikat lang to kasi detractor ni PGMA, wala naman nagawa sa balwarte nya sa Sorsogon.
In case of Cory it is a Calling, all of them concedes to the plain housewife. but on Noynoy I don’t think so. Yeah Aquino is good. but it is not a battle between good vs evil it is governance. it takes more than being good to become a president. And it does not stop there it goes beyond… the left and right, the militant, the activist. You can not serve your goodness to the hungry people, much more to the greedy. Sad to say majority of the filipinos are greedy, they do not know satisfation.
