It explains a lot!
Art mimicking life.
Seriously now and to be fair, she joins other world leaders like McCain on the same page…. It comes from Marvel Comics’ Secret Invasion issue 5 which came out 13 August 2008.
(update starts here) What’s a Skrull?
Skrulls are an alien race of shapeshifters (can mimic anybody, superheroes, humans). They can take the place of the real person without anybody knowing. In the current Marvel Comics series, “Secret Invasion”, the Skrull Race had infiltrated Earth and inserted their own agents to sow discord amongst humans and superhumans. They’ve launched an invasion of Earth and has thus far been successful in subjugating the planet.
(update ends here).
(Update 2.0A – full page of the above cropped image)

The comic was drawn by Leinil Yu and written by Brian Bendis.

Ha ha ha! They even incorporated the ramdam na ramdam rhetoric.
Cocoy, thanks for the update (on Skrulls). Now things are starting to make sense…
Gloria’s Pinnochio Song
Hi-ho beware-e-o…
come and watch as my nose grows…
the truth is what I say…
that is just the way it goes…
i apologize for not posting it earlier! cvj, it was privately pointed out to me that most people will not get what a skrull is.
hehe.
hope Old Media gets a copy and flash it on TV. Marvel is SO going to get more copies sold hehe.
And no, i don’t work for marvel but they’re awesome for doing this.
i’ll try to post the whole page.
lalabas kaya si harvey dent? :)
Cocoy,
I eagerly await your post of the full page.
Will cross-post it if I may in At Midfield along with a fuller treatment. Would you care to co-author the post in my blog?
E-mail me please at dingg458@gmail.com
Naghihintay,
Ding :)
I’m really sorry for this stupidity, but what is “Skrull”?
:D
J, no worries: Skrulls are an alien race of shapeshifters (can mimic anybody, superheroes, humans).
hehe. they’re the bad guys bent on world domination.
Gloria’s in good company though… even Steve Jobs is on the Page.
Ding, emailed you privately and i’ve posted a slightly smaller version of the full page.
if people will click it, they should see the whole page of the comic.
gloria’s actually in good company. obama is there. the pope is there.
Thanks, Cocoy. Drop by At Midfield. I’ve posted a screenshot of your FV post. Owe you one, kapatid. BTW, can get a spare copy of the issue itself for me? Will get it when we eyeball. You in the country?
Ding, thanks! will email you privately re: copy.
I like how Leinil Yu (the artist) incorporates Pinoy stuff in his comics work (like the chowking scene in that X-men Annual issue.
oh before i forget… just so we’re all on the same page…
i don’t think the artist and the writer of Secret Invasion had anything malicious or political to point out with including pgma as one of those replaced by a Skrull. My point being, it’s kinda cool to be Filipino and have such a pop culture reference. kinda like an easter egg.
@cocoy, I know what you mean… is that Obama in the bottom left??
these juveniles conjure up weird fantasies and actually believe their own hallucinations. the “gullible” filipinos, devoid of any critical thinking capability, devour them like maggots ingesting craps while high-fiving one another like olympian winners.
hector olympus,
sorry just noticed your post now… Secret invasion is published by Marvel Comics… the guys who make Spider-man and X-Men. Two Face is a character from DC Comics… the guys who make Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. So… Two Face isn’t going to make an appearance in Secret Invasion. heheh.
Nick, yep, that’s Obama.
Yu… the artist is Filipino btw.
Bencard, another way of looking at it is if you read the text… it is what every world leader promises but very rarely deliver. LOL.
Like all literature Secret Invasion mirrors our society to a degree.
Another example, the Hugo award winning comic book, Watchmen, which reflects life in the 1980s and is filled with adult themes. I’m also having a blast reading through DC’s Final Crisis book which has the premise, “The Day Evil Won”. it asks, what happens when the gods go to war and the bad guys won? what happens to the Earth, to Superman, to Batman, to Wonder Woman? In many ways it reflects our society.
They’re all awesome stories.
wassup guys? This is Leinil. Nothing politically tainted about GMA being there. It’s just a nod to fellow pinoys.
I will remain reticent when it comes to our local politics as it’s a delicate and divisive issue (hehehe) but the list actually includes people who I despise (Kim Jong Il, Anne Coulter), indifferent and greatly admire (Colbert, Dawkins). The point was for the skrulls to relay their messages via the most recognizable and influential people in different parts of the world. Take note that Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic and Tony Stark are there despite their established presence in the Savage Lands and non-skrull status.
People see what they want to see:)
grabe naman kayo mag comment!!!
skrull????
wag naman.
di biro ung posisyon nia!!!!
presidente ng nagkakagulong bansa.
Leinil, awesome work man!
indeed! :D
does that FMCC sign refer to Francis M’s clothing co.? I think it is:p
Awesome job Leinil! :D
Faces of real people I recognize in that page
Tiger Woods
Osama Bin Laden
Dalai Lama
Ophra Winfrey
John McCain
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
Kim Jong-il
Barrack Obama
Tom Cruise
Vladimir Putin
Pope Benedict XIV
Paris Hilton
Chris Rock
Steve Jobs
if i am right, George W. Bush is not in the picture, while the two top presidential contenders are there. Does this imply that Bush is now a lame duck president?
that’s reading too much into the comic, imho.
kupal kau pag nakita ni gloria to sabog kau mga loko………………………………………………………………………………………
heaven, i’m not a marvel expert… the Skrulls if i’m not mistaken just want a new world to call their own.
kolokoy sabi nga, “bring it on”. that said, there is nothing political with Leinil Yu’s drawing or Brian Bendis’ writing The Pope’s there too, you know. as is Steve Jobs, who btw i also admire for his leadership and business skill.
Filipinovoices is all about engaging issues at the highest level. We want to raise the bar of discussion to help this country. we do not disagree for disagreement’s sake. if government finds something useful here, use it. We’re one nation. As Milton once wrote, “they also serve those who stand and wait.” in our case we write.
Secret Invasion is a Marvel Event that will still be read 20 years from now. I think it is awesome that the President of the Republic of the Philippines is part of that culture. It is also art. as Yu put it, “people see what they want to see”.
