In a swift move to fulfill one of his campaign promises, President Barack Obama ordered the closure of Guantanamo Bay prison camp as well as all overseas CIA detention centres for terror suspects.
Signing the orders, Mr Obama said the US would continue to fight terror, but maintain “our values and our ideals”.
He also ordered a review of military trials for terror suspects and a ban on harsh interrogation methods.

The other side of the story:
the U.S. could torture perceived enemies because of American exceptionalism, great responsibility, prudent use of power, etc.
This hubris is what created this global financial mess.
the u.s. war on terrorism is a bit different from the financial crisis. the financial crisis was a result of greed and financial mismanagement, the war on terrorism was spawned by the series of vicious attacks of american personnel/embassies abroad that culminated in the Twin-Tower disaster.
gitmo was pictured by the liberal media as torture chamber for al-queda or al-queda surrogates.
but here is the plain truth: captured americans soldiers are shot on the head, or paraded on the streets then killed (Somalia: BlackHawk Down). gitmo prisoners captured in combat in Afghanistan or Iraq, are provided food and clothing and allowed to live, hire lawyers for their defense. their being tortured are being brought in american courts and their grievances are being debated in U.S. Congress.
These opportunities provided to Gitmo prisoners are never given to American captives. They are simply shot on their heads. Get it? ;)

Further, Obama wants that in Guantanamano Bay prison camp be closed not later than a year so that America will not be perceived as “jailer, jury, and judge”.
By implication, it may mean that all prison cells across the globe where there are these “CIA detention centers” will soon be closed so America exhibits its exemplying values before peoples of the world.
In effect, however, this sets a distance from how then President Bush managed this kind of affair.
