Well I'm also a lucky guy. I am with the civil service. Now unless the government goes bankrupt and the University of the Philippines becomes redundant, I will be out of a job!

We can't say that for colleagues in Ateneo or La Salle. When students can't cough up the fees, then even their good teachers will have to be given their walking papers.

BTW the government may go kaput before the UP becomes redundant or kaput!

I don't think we Pinoys lack imagination. What we lack is long term foresight.

Example. One potential money earner for the Philippines is coral culture and farming. With the reefs about to go, there will be a need for captive propagated corals. Even if our reefs are almost gone,we still have the resource and the right conditions for coral farming.

We are exploring this as a technology incubation venture. But we are stymied by our ridiculuous laws on coral exploitation to the extent that the government would rather give licences to companies that will import the colonies from countries like Israel (which has only one coral reef in Eilat)!

Now Israel leads the world in this technology.

Point taken but on the practical side, what "better" products should the romblonites do? If you make their marble industry 'large scale' to cater to hotel lobbies and russian mansions, how do you ensure that the entire village becomes 'owners' instead of 'employees' of another big marble quarrying company?

No, I think it's time to go to the basics. What you're forgetting is that most Filipinos already live in a state of constant want. What is missing is a leadership that fully acknowledges that want and builds his platform based on this acknowledgement.
