Sir, I have attended college 45 years ago. I was not able to complete the course due to financial problem ( 1 year and half of accounting). When I enrolled in 2008, in one of CEBU'S University, ALL my subject (passing grade) were NOT CREDITED. Is there any Republic Act regarding these matter..? College subject not credited..?

You have said lots of good ideas and suggestions, but what about ECO-awareness? I think incorporating ECO-awareness to Philippine Education can be a point for the big change.

@ thenashman - i'm still unsure why service contracts in return for state scholarship and subsidy is a bad thing. (folks who missed it, entry to that discussion here).

@ blackshama - re your September 29th, 2008, 1:22 pm, do you advocate mandatory armed forces service like in israel and south korea after high school? i'm thinking there may be some opposition from:

- conscientious objectors based on religion (along the lines of ebralinag vs. cebu district schools superintendent)

- those who don't want to die in mindanao, bicol, negros, et cetera

okay, only two reasons come to mind right now :D

@ DJB - my idea hasn't crystallized just yet, but here's my take: if all kids are required to attend elementary school by the constitution, and we have no public schools, the payment of tuition would presuppose a deprivation of property without due process.

okay, that's still tenuous, but i hope you get my drift.

i dunno -- i think the economics discussion may be valuable as part of the larger whole. in this post i'm interested in exploring your thoughts on the whole philippine educational framework and the downstream upsides/ consequences of the paradigms we choose.

karl, i think the key term is "intellectual curiosity" - a questioning mind that always searches for the right answer, always open to receive even that which contravenes its own biases. that, i think, is the best antidote to "vacuity".

So if the pinoy is vacuous in general, then maybe it would be a good suggestion to have the kids start with essay exams instead of memorization so every time they converse it would be based on their insight not on what they have memorized.

There is a problem in that picture, like where does a brilliant and insightful guy like Benign0 started to be not to be vacuous, how did he got to be so brilliant, I understand he attended college in The Ateneo but I am curious as to where he got his elementary education, to be that brilliant and insightful, maybe from the first grade he already was forced to answer questions like what is the meaning of life, where do babies come from,is there a god? I don't know.

enough of that, my only point is , do you guys think that scrapping the memorization part of our schooling is the way to go?
