Scandalizing The Suffering: The Pangandaman-Dela Paz Melee

The feuding Pangandamans and Dela Pazes are still on Page One.

The accused father and son golfing buddies were on nationwide radio and TV today to profess their innocence and claiming self defense with the ‘honorable’ 27-year-old mayor of a little known town in Lanao accusing a junior golfer 13 years his junior of having wielded an angry fist first as the young man’s 56-year-ild father peppered him with invectives and the man’s daughter poking him with an umbrella.

Not content, one of the Dela Pazes also allegedly whipped Nasser Pangandaman Jr with steel golf club that fractured his left hand’s little finger.

Well ahead of the Pangandamans’ belated ‘story of grief’ the Dela Pazes had come out with their version of how Mr. Delfin Dela Paz and his son were mauled last Friday in Antipolo’s Valley Golf and Country Club.

So in a society where hunger is deepening and corruption is in the upper reaches of government we are now treated to a show of the comportment of those of power and pelf when quarreling over golf etiquette.

The courts will eventually decide who’s telling the truth in this damnable Yuletide episode.

How about the rest of society which has been needlessly scandalized?

What of the sitting president and how a member of her official family has managed to further erode whatever is left of presumed public esteem of her administration?

Ang liit-liit na bagay…pinalalaki masyado! This is exactly why it is so difficult for us to have peace in this puny little planet of ours. Its so trivial! A simple game of golf turning into this scuffle? And now becoming a Muslim vs Christian thing? Or a manileno vs probinsyano or what have you? Why can’t just people get along?

The reason is because everyone involves want to get even. “Walang pumapayag na malamangan siya nung isa!”

I don’t care who started what or who hit who first or who cursed who first. I don’t really care anymore. I’m just sad that it happened. Aren’t you?

What’s the difference between the original and the sanitized version of Bambee’s blog? Except for the colors, nothing is changed. The Pangandamans mauled the older and younger de la Paz. Period.

ah, the youtube author. are you blind or what? so how about this difference?

  12. leytenian says:

so if the mayor was indeed registered to be ahead of the dela paz but LATE on pace of Play. who has the responsibility to maintain order of Pace of Play and warn dela paz that a possible Play through may occur?

the mayor’s reaction of insisting that he was registered first is irrelevant because the dela paz was already allowed to tee off by VGCC. They were already on the 4th or 5th tee. If I have to calculate the time in every hole at normal pace, it could be every 15 minutes for golf cart and longer for walking as time spent in every hole.
This could mean that the mayor was late for an hour or more from the original registration. I will not believe that the mayor was only late for 30 minutes because this could only take the dela paz on the second hole.

Even if we assumed that the pangandamans were registered together, the mayor who was late should have confronted the club marshall and let the marshall do all the talking to the dela paz so that the mayor can play through. Is it not the right thing to do as a public servant?, to uphold the law of ethics and respect the citizens he serves?

The dela paz has the right to say NO to anybody who will play through, don’t you think?

If we are both on the same golf course, I am ahead of you. I am walking with 2 other friends and you are in the cart with 2 other friends. How do you approach me to play thru. When is the best time to approach me and my group? What would be your reaction if I will say NO to your request of play through? would you say, hindi mo ba ako kilala? :)

As a golfer, do you request to play through in the middle of the fairways where I am already on my second shot or when I’m done with the hole?

Do you like to swing your club when moving golf cart or moving object is within your vicinity of view? It could have been that the mayor did not wait for the right time that the dela paz was annoyed. In this case, who is responsible in starting the fight?

The whole issue is political with no ethics and moral. Please do not play like the mayor. It will not improve your game. :)

The issue is about ethics and etiquette in the golf course and public service. The latter reflects the ethical behavior of this current administration.

sige.. let’s play golf and allow all politicians to play through? No way Jose.

  13. pulis na pogi says:

so if you get annoyed and poke with an umbrella the person who annoyed you, then it is still the “annoyer’s” fault?

thank you for making it very very clear: by all accounts and estimations, it was really the pagdanganans who started the whole melee by breaking every rule in the golf rule book.

and when the de la pazes protested according to the golf rule book, the pagdanganan even has the temerity to throw the first punch.

    ayos jose…galeng galeng…

  14. Juwan_D says:

    pulis,

teka…bayaran na lang kita…di ba pera lang naman laman ng mga utak ninyo? bwehehehehe

  15. leytenian says:

pulis, I don’t think i will poke you with my umbrella unless I am provoke. It’s human nature , my dear. pila man ka, bayaran na lang ta ka dong. :)

  16. Juwan_D says:

    Leytenian,

Kung si pulis morpovoke nimo…dont poke him with an umbrella…paghatag ug usa ka lapad nga tanduay didto sa istambay sa carbon…hehehe sayangon man nimo imong oras para sa tawong way gamit ug way pulos…

  17. Juwan_D says:

  18. leytenian says:

    uy Juwan, bisaya diay ka…

I have to make a point here again on this case. Arrogant people are all talks and blah blah blah. I think the mayor was insulted that the dela paz said NO to Play through.

Pag sumbag sa mayor, ming tikangkang si dela paz then gitosok sa payong. I always believe that the mayor has thrown the first punch to the big mouth of dela paz.

The result of this case is beneficial for the people. It’s an awareness to the other political figures that there’s a necessity for them to act according to justness, ethical behavior and moral conduct. They must understand that they are never above the law. Any future incident similar to this will spread like wildfire across the internet.

If this case went to trial and I happen to be one of the jury. I will send the mayor to jail without bail and suspend the DAR secretary.

  19. Juwan_D says:

    Leytenian,

  20. hahaha, Juan_D and leytenian,

running out or arguments? my elementary teacher once told me to expect being attacked personally once other people run out of arguments, much like what happened to your idol de la paz!

leytenian, i had been restraining myself from thinking that you are just another pretty face whose capital to fame and life is the body but the more you post, the more i believe that you are. in your last three posts, you insist that the pagdanganans started the physical confrontation despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. even in the interview of korina sanchez of delfin de la paz at anc last january 5, the latter cannot give a straight answer when korina asked who actually made the first strike. he stammered and replied “sort of” simultaneous.

obviously, dela Paz is speaking in a controlled and deliberate manner as he needs to be consistent with the second version of bambee’s blog. and that is not telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!

likewise, as early as jan. 2, these kinds of posts emerged in pinoygolf.com where valley golf members are talking among themselves:

“Jovi, if you want to get the whole story – come to valley golf club and make your own investigation and interview the witnesses. Majority of the members/employees at Valley know what happened and very few if any are on the dela paz camp.”

sabagay, maybe you haven’t been there for quite a while. why don’t you try calling up former customers from there so you can visit again?

and to you Juan_D…ah, never mind…

  21. leytenian says:

    pulis na pogi,

you have a point but my assessment favors to the dela paz. I stick to my principle. I am a golfer myself but my point is, no politicians or nobody can “play through” by me unless i was given the courtesy. If you need to catch up and play through by me with your buddy Juwan D ( for example) , I have no problem with that but please let me know first. You know what I mean. I couldn’t find any single blog that the pangandamans understood where the dela paz was coming from instead bambee’s story spread like wildfire across the internet.

This case is also cultural as what Manolo said. I don’t like it because it confirms that this country needs a lot of help. High pride within the government system.

I have already made my decision and there’s nothing you can do about it. :) you can call me bias ,that’s fine.

  22. leytenian says:

    pulis,

pls also remember that I will still use my umbrella to poke somebody if provoke for self defense. we all know that an umbrella is not the right tool to START a fight. it’s just common sense :)

  23. ley,

no problem. personal bias is an inherent characteristic of any individual.

  24. ley,

and by the way, i have seen a lot of people start a fight with no tools at all.

  25. i wonder what is the next thing that the de la paz apologists will say, now that valley golf expells Dela Paz and only suspends for two years the dar chief.

valley golf concluded that de la paz instigated the fight!

  26. Nick says:

pulis, with all due respect I still believe the de la Pazes are a majorly aggrieved party here, although I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the elder Secretary Pangandaman (his two sons, however, remain a different story), who might indeed have suffered a bit of clamorous overkill with regards to the bloggers insisting he RESIGN HIS POST over this row.

Recent new items insist the de la Pazes instigated the row with cusswords and an umbrella? Definitely open to investigation. After all, there are two sides to every story.

The Pangandamans putting forward a child abuse suit of their own (the child in question being Secretary Pangandaman’s 8-year-old grandson, who witnessed the melee and was presumable traumatised by it)? For the child’s sake alone this is perfectly reasonable.

However, I’m still inclined to believe the rest of the Pangandaman’s defense is a whole load of hot air. No matter how the row started, two grown men beating up a 14-year-old kid? Not cool. Threatening an already-agitated family with firearms? Deadly overkill. And I cannot even figure out where the HELL the allegations involving the ice pick and the baseball bat came from.

  27. nick, here is my arguments about that 14 year old “kid.”

    http://pulisnapogi.blogspot.com/2009/01/14-year-old-kid.html

  28. You may need to return to grammar school dude. :)

    • Ridge says:

Oh f*ck grammar! Only sycophants of the system require and enslave themselves to be perfect in it. It’s not necessary for survival or even for communication. And the irony is, that language is not even OURS. It contains the programming of the West, which time and again is not applicable to the East…(or at least, we’re struggling hard enough to conform to the template).

      And why should WE??!

What if I require you to be perfect in say, Quenya or Rohirric or Valarin? Do you think that would contribute at all to anybody’s progress (including yours)?

Language is a powerful medium. It is a programming by itself…like Python and Perl. Do not be its slave…rather, use it…if it taxes you beyond your happiness, then it has consumed you.

  29. Pareho kayo ng fractured English ng VMCC Fort Knox Agency blue guards. Pulis ka nga. Patola? Tara magsalabat na lang tayo.

  30. Nick says:

    pulis:
“nick, here is my arguments about that 14 year old “kid.”

    http://pulisnapogi.blogspot.com/2009/01/14-year-old-kid.html

Honestly? You consider that a perfectly fine excuse for two guys to just beat somebody up? It doesn’t matter if Bino was 14, 18 or 80, the fact that Secretary Pangandaman’s sons pummeled the crap out of him when he wasn’t even doing anything remotely violent (what you’re gonna prove to me the kid was menacingly waving his golf club at the guys now?) is NOT COOL.

  31. ding,

i am doing my blog on the fly. pulis ako at hindi “journalist.” most of the time i do in in a palm pilot shile sitting in a patrol car. no time to edit if for the grammar. but is it just the only thing you can say about my blog ding? no counter arguments whatsoever about the “14 year old kid?” and i thought you perfectly understand the english of VMCC Fort Knox Agency blue guards even if it is broken–to the extent of calling the pangandamans liars…hehehe

you need to return to dsspc first i think (nagqualify ka ba dun?)

at ikaw nick, what do you mean “pummeled the crap out of him when he wasn’t even doing anything remotely violent?” come to me and i will show you what pummel means–i will make sure that you will have more than bloddy ears that you will treat with betadine.

you two can’t still accept that you failed your mission orders?

    hay…

    • Ridge says:

Come along now…it’s not “pogi” anymore. I could smell ego frailty in the air. A police officer, of all people, should know, never to engage the ego. And I expect all police officers to be so…”tolerant” and “immovable”. This is a primary requirement of your profession. It is a weakness and a disgrace for the “protector of the people” and a “public servant” to take anything personal and even be manipulated to engage in unnecessary conflict.

The PNP already has a bad rep for its bullying and brutality… It’s a disgraceful legacy handed down from Spanish slavery that the police is the class bully who could control people. They are not. They’re meant to protect and serve the civilians’ interest…not command respect…but earn it. Civilians pay for their existence…so its main employer is the People.

Come along now…don’t be such a spoilsport. I’ve worked with the police before…they’re generally affable and gracious. (Especially after winning Tong-its and Pusoy-dos with a 15K ante) And yes, some are cute…are you?

  32. ac/dc?

  33. at ding, name calling is the last thing i expect from somebody who claims to be a journalist for 30 years. guess what, i am also a cop for 15 years and i can say with full confidence that scalawag policemen and scalawag journalists have the same modus operandi!

  34. baycas says:

sorry, dito ko pala gusto ilagay ang mga sumusunod…

It is stated in RA 7610 that:

For purposes of this Act, the penalty for the commission of acts punishable under Articles 248, 249, 262, paragraph 2, and 263, paragraph 1 of Act No. 3815, as amended, the Revised Penal Code, for the crimes of murder, homicide, other intentional mutilation, and serious physical injuries, respectively, shall be reclusion perpetua when the victim is under twelve (12) years of age.

If found guilty, an adult causing physical injury to a minor who is twelve (12) years old and above will not be meted capital punishment.

  35. “most of the time i do in in a palm pilot shile sitting in a patrol car.!”

Aha. No wonders criminals rule the streets. I guess texting is also your hobby then while on official duty. Defending abusive public officials also comes with the TOR?

  36. you don’t know nothing about the many aspects of policing ding. ni hindi mo nga alam kung ano talaga ang trabaho ko. sinabi ko ba na beat patroller ako? ganyan na ganyan ang dating ng mga press people kuno pag pumipila sila sa opisina ko para manghingi ng gasolina or pangmiryenda!

  37. O so you must be so POWERFUL then. Takot ako :)

  38. And ‘pogi’ to boot. Impressive. So I should call you boss you mean? Swerte

  39. from the moment that the news broke about the mauling, I felt scared for I know this will take a toll on the Muslim community in the Philippines. We don’t really know what happened and I am sad that people judge the whole thing after only hearing one side. For once, can we listen to the other? There will be no misunderstanding and ‘kaguluhan’ if nothing triggers it. There are three caddies who witnessed the situation and they said it was the dela Paz who pointed an umbrella to the Pangandamuns. DO YOU KNOW THIS? Perhaps only few people do because media itself is biased. She loves to sensationalize things and we, the Muslims, are always victims of that.

    salamat na lang.

    • Justine B says:

I like your comments. Let me share some of my own:

As an experienced lawyer, I thought from the begining that here was something really off about the Bambee account of the incident. Bambee wrote that Sec P purportedly watched without participating, and then asked,”Don’t you know who I am?” That is a very inflammatory statement that really ticks off any Filipino who’s ever felt oppressed or pushed around by someone more influential or wealthy. It’s just that it didn’t make…well, sense, for him to say that when he hadn’t taken part but just watched. Its simply not consistent with human nature. All in all, it struck me as something Bambee invented to agitate people and to get sympathy…In addition, its also a work skill of mine to be good at reading facial expressions, and Delfin de la Paz struck me as being arrogant and highhanded.Even his statement na “mahirap palang maging maliit” struck me as manipulative and fake. He’s not exactly impoverished…Now, Valley Golf has investigated and ferreted out the facts, which turn out to be very different from Bambee’s one-sided and manipulative account. Its also a case of reaping what you sow because de la Paz throws his weight around in Valley Golf, which hasn’t exactly endeared him to them….By the way,I understand Bambee studies overseas. What’s her major?Creative writing?

  41. snakebitexx666xx says:

kung courtesy sa golf ang pag uusapan, mali nga at hindi nag-paalam si mayor nung nag-overtake siya kasi its un-gentlemanly, kasi nga daw, “golf is a gentleman’s game” (from mr. golfer of the year, mando paguio). e ang akin lang kung gentleman si mr. de la paz ay dapat he settled it in gentlemanly way. in short, kung di nag-angas si mr. de la paz, e malamang isang hampas lupa pa rin siya ngayon (golf terms 101: hampas lupa – panay hampas sa lupa meaning hitting always behind the ball). ayun nga mataas ang ihi ni daddy e, so ano gagayahin ni bunsoy? (do the effin math, homos!) ganon din naman si mayor at si daddy e, nagkataon lang na amateur sila mr. de la paz. for all we know, baka kung naging politician di si mr. de la paz mas maging gago ito kesa kay mayor. e buruin mong di nang-aamoy kung sino kinakalaban. its either his so arrogant or his so effin stupid.

    snake out.

  42. nightfly says:

The Pangandamans are at a disadvantage here because they are public officials. The DAR Sec and mayor of Masiao were supposed to have conducted themselves within the boundaries of the law. Both parties were probably stupid enough to get into a pissing contest that went haywire. Kaya minsan may mga kapwa pulis na nagbabarilan sa beerhouse kasi nasagi lang sa dansfloor ang isa. E, parehong maybaril at parehong lasing, sino ang dapat mag so-sorry? Ayun nagbarilan. Enggot talaga.

  43. forbambee's justice says:

What is Reasonable? let’s review EXCESSIVE force or DEADLY force used by the pangandamans versus a golf ball and an umbrella.

which one can be classified as an INSTRUMENT of deadly force that will likely cause death or great bodily harm ?

    A. umbrella and golf ball from de la paz
    B. Guns and bodyguards of pangandamans.

you all are not STUPID right? can you cite me an article that someone died because he/she was hit by a golf ball… hahahaha. Can you share a case or link that an umbrella is an instrument generally used to harm or physically injure someone.

An umbrella can be used for self defense if an individual is provoked by an excessive force.

    who can deliver excessive force?
    A. the old man and his son ?
    B. the mayor and the bodyguards of the pangandamans?

What is the duty of the senior pangandaman as a public official to prevent the injury. Can he be liable of ” Ommission to ACT” as there was a strict and legal duty for him to ACT.

Who could inflict more harm and who would retreat reasonably? A mere arrogance of words from the dela paz is NOT ENOUGH PROVOCATION to cause an assault. The use of deadly force and pangandamans bodyguards may not be a VALID self defense.

  44. It’s disturbing how this story was distorted on the blogosphere. Now that the official report has come out, many of the early blogger supporters who spread the distortions are nowhere to be found. No apologies. No retractions. A few newspaper columnists have issued apologies, where are the blogger apologies? (cricket sounds)
