The Aquino sacrifice

January 16th, 2010 by Patricio Mangubat

Kris Aquino’s latest “antics” is being used by the political enemies of her brother. One of the supporters of Gibo even said that “presidential leadership is personal” and voters must discern on the personal qualities of each candidate and from there, choose.

I agree. Morals or ethics do come into the picture, when choosing the best candidate for the Office of the President. However, let me just say that why is it that some people try very hard to ascribe Kris Aquino’s faults to her brother? If you look at this Kristeta scandal, it does not directly involve Noynoy; yet some people blame him for his sister’s actions.

If personal morals are included, then, let us just elect priests or pastors or imams as presidents and get on with our lives. If ethics are involved in our list of qualifications, then, let’s just elect Manoling Morato.

Fact is, Noynoy Aquino is now in a very solid position of strength based mainly on his family surname. The Aquino brand has an emotive attachment with ours, because of what this family has sacrificed for the sake of the many. If we see Kris right now as a dysfunctional person, blame Marcos. It was Macoy who disrupted the lives of millions, most especially the Aquinos. Was it Kris fault that she did not spend time with Ninoy? It was Macoy who incarcerated Ninoy for many years, especially during those times when Kris was just a toddler.

Many people appreciate and feel it as “utang na loob” that this family sacrificed their personal comforts just to serve our Country. And it is pretty darn evil for some people to cast aspersions against the Aquinos for the frailties of Kris.

Tell me, who among us can actually do the same thing as what the Aquinos did?

Can Villar say that he suffered during the dark days of the dictatorship? No. He was living in the comforts of his home, thanks to his many deals with the cronies of the regime. It was during Macoy’s time that Villar got hold of many properties and developed his low-cost housing schemes.

How about Gilbert Teodoro, did his family suffered under Macoy? No. Teodoro’s father worked for Macoy and his family was so close to Danding, who was one of Macoy’s cronies.

How about Dick Gordon and Joseph Estrada? Don’t forget that they served as mayors under Macoy and were in fact, the last ones to abandon their posts after EDSA Uno. Fact was, Dick even opposed the EDSA Revolution.

The reason why almost 50% of Filipinos prefer Noynoy is the fact that these people feel indebted to the family which gave the most sacrifice for Philippine democracy. I am not saying that the Aquinos are the only ones who suffered under Marcos. No. Many families even gave their sons and daughters to die as martyrs.

Again, let me dare some people—is presidential leadership, personal? Noynoy Aquino smokes, will this affect people’s perception of him as a suitable presidential candidate? Gilbert Teodoro does not know how to cook. Will this be used against him? Manny Villar loves concrete instead of trees. Will this affect his chances (of course!)? And Gordon loves Americans. Again, will this be used against them? How about Erap? Erap admits that he fathered many sons and daughters. Will we fault him for loving so many girls all at the same time (of course)?
