The mind’s small cup overfloweth

Is it really all about delivering to people messages that they’d like to hear in a form or a style they are comfy with? Or is it all about delivering messages that raise the bar of awareness and understanding as well as raise the quality of the discussion?

The earlier of the above two is consistent with a challenge issued to “intellectuals” (whether they be self-described or recognised as such) by a commenter in my last article:

Are we mediocre or not merely average because we dont read books and take things lightly and people watch a lot of TV. I dont think so. If you’re such an intellectual you need to understand other people’s circumstances and how they are made up. Hindi naman pwede na isubo mo sa iba ang hindi nila gusto at baka isusuka lang nang tao, to be brutally frank. But you can do some things to make people appreciate things.

The view I take is that there is a manner by which ideas and topics of substance can be communicated — without being pompously verbose — that requires a certain degree of smarts and a certain command over communication faculties for the recipient of the message to be able to understand it.

So here’s the hard question:

Who is personally responsible for any initiative to acquire said smarts and faculties?

Does the burden of responsibility for getting a brilliant message across to those who need it the most rest on the messenger (to dumb it down) or the message recipient (to step up and comprehend in whatever way it takes)?

image013

So yes, ma’am, I do “understand other people’s circumstances”. Those “other people” are people that were unfortunate enough to have been deprived of an attitude and mindset of taking personal accountability for creating opportunities for themselves and acquiring the tools to comprehend.

It is common knowledge that people who have a higher degree of education attainment, are more intelligent, or are more widely read (or any combination of these three) tend to have broader vocabularies at their disposal. The means to comprehend all come hand-in-hand: both the intellectual horsepower and the communication tools to recognise, acquire, and digest information of consequence. Of course there is also exceptional talent involved in expressing what are perceived to be complex concepts in simple terms (as I demonstrate in an article I once posted describing the financial crisis in a form that even morons can understand). But then to be able to simplify a “complex” beast, one needs first to be on top of the breadth and depth of scope of said beast first.

A small cup overfloweth in seeking to partake of the wealth of content within a large vessel.

Small minds get a taste of a sumptuous meal of knowledge and ideas laid out by bigger minds but are ultimately left unsatisfied because of an insufficient capacity to digest.

Tough luck, is what I say. This simple reality explains why there are winners and there are losers. Losers have a simple choice, really:

Either you step up and comprehend, or quit complaining about how things are “too complicated” for you.

Here’s another piece of wisdom that may pop some people’s bubbles:

The truth hurts. Can you handle that?

Anyone who’s had the character-building experience of taking care of young kids (at least those who did not delegate a big chunk of this duty to nannies) will probably remember times when you simply had no other choice but to hold your frightened kid down so that a doctor could administer medication via a syringe. I also remember many other instances of things you had to do that quite simply bewildered a child. Their limited experience and knowledge made understanding certain things that had to be done beyond their scope of understanding at the moment. There were times that we simply had to apply antibiotic ointment into an eye afflicted by conjunctivitis, or disinfect an open wound with medicine that stings, or pull out a splinter from a finger. In other words: bitter pills need to be swallowed.

Suffice to say, no amount of babytalk will change the reality of what needs to be done and what needs to be comprehended. Taking a university course that will open doors for you to earning big bucks is not easy, not cheap, and often not fun. So for those who think that a message that contains valuable learning can be pitched in the form that can be enjoyed as one would an episode of Wowowee, deal with this message:

Think again.

    MAIBA tayo just to digress:

I remember on narrative from your letter sender when he asked his parents where children come from, and they answer from the pwet.
And then now you tell us about, how you dealt with your children.
Do you give them a straight answer, let say if they asked this at the tender age of three?
I get it ,that narrative does not nessarily fit you, just the point you are driving at,correct?

Actually, I can agree with this. An educated Pinoy is like a pig with lipstick. The underbelly of Da Pinoy psyche never fails to shine through a veneer of education from even the best of schools. Ths is something Orion does say in his classic piece (excerpt as follows):

Yet the quality of logical ability and critical thinking found [in internet forums and blogs] is dismal. While there are a few highly intelligent and rational members who post logically presented insightful messages, there is often a larger number of members who are often unable to appreciate the insights posted, usually because on the surface, they have a knee-jerk reaction to some of the insights. Often, they disagree without even properly reading through or digesting the data that is presented by the member they disagree with. And rather than aiming to understand things fully and get to the “bottom of things” in a logical and rational way, using sophistry and the quest to “appear correct” is how these members use “logic.”

A large number of people care more about people’s credentials rather than the logical merits of a case. People resort to various forms of argumenta ad hominem in order to retort or refute logically-presented arguments. They’d resort to fervent beliefs in ideology or religion, rather than properly thinking things through in a critical fashion to get their answers and justify their stand on certain causes. The usual result is that these people say “It is correct because I say so! I say so, because I have a PhD in this-and-that…” as opposed to saying “Based on the evidence presented and the analysis that went into it, these are my findings…”

Until the vast majority of the Philippine Élite are capable of discussing issues rationally in a calm, cold, detached, critically objective, and scientific manner, as opposed to discussions based on fervently-held fanatical beliefs and religio-ideological convictions, the élite will be considered far from being enlightened. If the majority of the élite is far from being enlightened, then the future of the society it heads cannot be said to be headed in a positive direction.

Phil Manila, maybe the above article provides a good perspective to what you say here:

To my mind, a peoples’ intellectual culture is influenced by several factors: a tradition of pursuit of knowledge (are we a reading or watching people?), pop culture largely influenced by mass media, government programs to enhance development of knowledge, etc.

Are these factors present in our society? Or are we Utak Komiks because of the structural weaknesses?

Is Filipino culture one that values pursuit of knowledge?

Keep in mind that the following two statements describe two very different approaches to thinking:

    :D pursuing knowledge

    :D pursuing education/credentials

They are two very different things.

A well balanced individual often does both. And some people who lack the second (education/credentials) still pursue knowledge with a vengeance. But I think it is quite obvious that, in our society, there are lots of folk who do only the second. They may bristle with diplomas and acronyms after their name but remain vacuous in the way that they approach problems (and may even be hopeless at framing problem statements well to begin with).

    ;)

  14. Primer C. Pagunuran Primer says:

I am beginning to be disturb with this attitudinal problem one exhibits around here: that of name calling or tagging one fellow commenter or blogger as – “idiot, punk, virus”.

These are uncalled for. Why doesn’t that commenter simply comment on the ideas propounded and piece them apart to powder, if he can.

Renato here always brings in a whole chunk of ideas that are beyond the ordinaire. He makes sense. I don’t really like him, personally but if his ideas are simply allowed to float, it might even create sea change.

Enough with people with extreme attitudinal problems or why spill the beans?

    • CheekyChic says:

Firstly, let me have a big laugh in this article. It’s not funny haha bad but good hehe. I appreciate you for quoting me but you forgot to remember my name Cheekychic.

I envy Mr Renato Pacifico for always having a good laugh and being mentioned all the time. I say, keep him here to keep everyone here on one’s toes. I bet he is a good writer and he believes in anyone’s freedom to be his or her self.

I read most of his comments and I am officially a Mr RP fan. Simple, straightforward and so funny for the 3S and his “walang paki” attitude keeps him going with his arsenal of comments. Your blog should consider yourselves lucky that he found you after all the blog hopping and walking that he probably did.

I mean what the??? urinal crap picture was put in this article to insult everyone and all the other Filipinos who cant even defend themselves, as they don’t know you Sir Benign whatever. You are so unhappy of others because they don’t seem to get what you are writing about by calling us small minded, unintellectual and uneducated. Okay, I’ll let you do that. I will accept that will all the kisses in the world to make you happy for undermining other people’s intelligence and this is my last take on you.

As I leave, I will give you my small-minded English and say this “I, no understanding the writing, das why – I, just going. Thanking you.”

Lastly, good luck and don’t quote me again as I was doing that in a nice way. Pareho tayo Pilipino, kaya huwag mong insultohin kapwa mo. Dont do a selective memory when someone disagrees with your ideas.

Mr Primer, I’d rather have a good sleep than comment and there is no need to expound on things that dont matter as much. Kasi, how people think and how they accept knowledge, ma-mangmang or too intellectual ang iba, wala na tayo doon as it is their choice to be. Smile everyone.

  15. Ardeen(Facebook heckler) says:

I am afraid Benigno is right. Still my argument are based on my restricted observations:
    1. That those that are intellectual are easily ostracized by the public
    2. Those that are smart, are smart enough to know that showing intelligence raises a knee-jerk reaction, something that could be envy(I don’t know).
    3. Silence as a powerful virtue.

    Which leads to people
    1. Not showing their true talents, a symptom which shows itself with silence as the a high virtue.
    2. Reversion to a less brainy outlook. Reduced to alcohol, women and nicotine addictions.

    Other factors:
    1. Government’s(Oligarch controlled) apathy and general interest to keep people stupid.

  16. Karl Garcia says:

“I am beginning to be disturb with this attitudinal problem one exhibits around here: that of name calling or tagging one fellow commenter or blogger as – “idiot, punk, virus”.”

sanayan lang yan, sabi nga ng kaibigan nating si dJB, pikon talo.
sa kanya ko din nadinig yung we learn from those who disagree.

    isn’t it ironic?

  17. benign0 says:

Dismissing “intellectualisation” is quite easy, actually. All you have to do is:

    :D label “intellectual” material as “hi-fallutin” crap;

    :D label “intellectuals” as windbags who are “out of touch” with the “common tao”;

    and,

:D label people who open long-cherished traditions and belief systems to critical scrutiny as “coconut racists”.

Do all of the above and you instantly appeal to underclass/populist mentalities.

Labels are quite handy for getting flawed messages across to people who are too lazy to think for themselves or unfortunate enough to be devoid of the intellectual tools to understand information.

    It’s simple, really™ — though not for the small-minded.

Is it because people that talk this way end up being assimilated in other cultures? Even though their still here rsiding in this country. How do you deal with their intellectual close-mindedness though?

  18. Liam says:

What I like about Benign0′s approach is that it is to a certain extent “more objective” compared to most opinion writers and comment-ers here in FV, whose styles tend to be, shall we say, impassioned and subjective.

His attacks are targeted mainly against the basic and fundamental flaws of the Filipino psyche, not taking the usual route of blaming society’s ills on the usual suspects.

But benigs, if I may request, can you try writing something positive for a change?! i just want to see if the style will change.

    • Bert says:

Impossible, Liam. benigz has been trying to do that all those years, he can’t! Perhaps it’s in his psyche, but he can try again.

    • GabbyD says:

i agree. i’ve never read benign0 write anything positive in his own race. he does have a favorable opinion about himself however… i’d like to know how much of benign0 is real. he once commented on reyna’s blog that benign0′s persona is for public consumption. when i asked him whether his online persona reflects his real life, waved the question aside and said ” i should have figured it out by now” or something like that…

With hard work and scholarships these people can go far in life. Sacrificing many things and foregoing many pleasures puberty usually brings. Unless you’re taking a job then it’s a liitle more easier on the wallet.

The promise of this new world

        Ngunit ‘di lamang higante
        Ang nagkakalat ng dumi
May kinalaman din ang tulad natin

hahaha, thanks bong for the cheap dedication. i really appreciate it. did i talk to you lately? why suddenly distract my attention away from benigno? you see, the love and hate of leytenian to benign0 is my privilege not yours. :)

      • ArdeeN(FacebookHeckler) says:

Perhaps, but like the Vulcans his arrogance has altruistic aftertastes(with a bitter overture). Yes Benigz, is a prick. That much is a given. However, and this is perhaps to my mother’s personal upbringing I find his words quite useful. Bitter maybe, but his not passing himself as a cultish leader or intellectual. One that promises easy ways in life through faith. No televangelist or messiah. He’s just laying the facts as it is. But who will be a foil to our Mr. Spock?

        leytenian:

the ears overflow.. with buog

      • ArdeeN(FacebookHeckler) says:

leytenian, I believe this is a signs of the time he and us lives. Assuming that the virtues which brings success in this lifetime are the barometer by which everything else is measured then a safe answer would have to be that:
        1. Futility of Armed Violence/Revolution
        2. Futility of Street Protests
        3. Futility of PRayers
        4. Personal advancement with hard work and immigration

has caused Benigz to be skptical of any grassroots campaign that promises to bring about change..

  20. leytenian says:

yup, the mind’s small cup is overflowing indeed. i do like your sense of humor benigs. Wisdom tooth? maybe. LOL

    Chickycheek,
Renato has no plan to get away from here however some will almost kick him out. Fact is, he could pass off as a great filibuster, if he must.

Secondly, we all acquire an attitude, one way or other, of wanting to leave FV. Even that one or another who already said they leave, never really left us. They are just at the other side of the river.

If for Renato, this is the best place to be, I have no reason to think otherwise. But trolls, paid hacks, trumps, scoundrels, racist, pseudo-intellectual masturbators, high brow entertainers, people without substance, all sorts of hoi polloi – are all here inhabiting a damn nice place where one is free, YES FREE.

    Thanks Nick!

Why do i always have to scroll down in great length before i get to the next valid comment?

  23. benign0 says:

i agree. i’ve never read benign0 write anything positive in his own race. he does have a favorable opinion about himself however…

Liam/GabbyD, why don’t you propose a topic that you think will result in a possibly positive light being cast upon the Philippines then?

Madali naman akong kausapin e. If we identify something objectively positive about the Philippines and about its people collectively, then by all means, I’ll be the first to step up and turn it into another one of my brilliant articles.

    Here’s some criteria I propose:

    :D It has to be something about a achievement that can be attributed to Filipinos as a people (so none of this citing Manny Pacquiao or Lea Salonga as “evidence” of Pinoy achievement crap, please);

    or;

    :D It has to be about an asepct of Pinoys as a people that provides reasonably substantiable evidence of “hope” that a brighter future is within our sights;

    or;

    :D It has to be about something being done fundamentally differently that can be cited as possible evidence of a future that is different from the groundhog-day-like history of the Philippines in the last 50 years;

or any combination of the above three.

Quite a simple and reasonable set of criteria, yes?

    • GabbyD says:

OK! lets play this game. on criteria 1, can you give an example of an achievement that is attributable to a people (as opposed to a class, i.e. jews, etc, or a person, or a profession scientists)?

      • Bert says:

no answer GabbyD. the cup overfloweth, heheh.

      • GabbyD says:

yeah, i was hoping to get an answer so as to know what is an example of an achievement that is attributable to a people, VS persons VS a person

    • Joe America says:

If a Filipino won the Nobel Peace Prize, it would be attributed to his education and cultural upbringing as a “Filipino People” I suppose . . . say by sitting down with MILF and the Govmt and being the architect of a long and lasting peace.

Or a Pulitzer is probably simpler. The Inquirer is getting close with it’s editorial blasts. Someone just needs to notify the prize-people mebbee.

Or invent an efficient way to turn crap into energy. That signifies a way to use the People’s natural resources.

      Joe

      • GabbyD says:

thats exactly my point of confusion with b0′s game. when is an acheivement by a people, VS persons , or VS a person. some thinkers even think that nations are artificial and misleading constructs.

the only time a people is credited is when there are no records to show there was a specific person involved, coz of the fact no one recorded who invented it.

    your cup overfloweth

    Indeed. :D

If the venerable anti-fascist would have it, he will exercise fascism to rid the comment threads of Renato

  28. Bert says:

Renato, after reading your post 999 times who wants to read it again. ako lang ang matiyaga, heheh.

  29. dawn says:

ako din bert, kaya ako nandito palagi para di magbasa ng posts kundi para basahin ang comment ni renata

  30. GabbyD says:

why? what about renato’s comments do you like?
