The Philippine Issues Writing Project

April 13th, 2008 at 7:30 pm by Nick

UPDATE:The Project is over, Thank you to everyone who participated, the entries were enlightening and eye opening.  Thank you also to those who sponsored prizes for the Writing Project!  More Writing Projects to come! HEAD ON TO THE FINAL SUMMARY POST!

UPDATE, NEW DEADLINE! JUNE 27

UPDATE, NEW PRIZE PAGE!

Please Note: All Participants receive a FREE STICKER.. However, we still need the address as to where to send it to, please use the contact form, and your name, so we can send you your sticker.

Along with the launching of Filipino Voices.com we would like to also announce the simultaneous launching of a writing project. The Philippine Issues writing project. You decide the issue, in your own words, in your own style. This is a way in which everyone can participate, and this is also a way in which our readers will realize the multi dimensional aspect of the challenges we face as a nation.

So whether you are a technology blogger, a personal blogger, socio-political blogger, or a lifestyle blogger, anyone can participate, and is encouraged to participate.
This will be a two month long writing project, each Friday we will announce those who have participated and the articles they have written.

This is about the issues that you feel need to be written about. Whether it is in the technology sector, our economy, social justice, politics, it’s all up to you, be thoughtful and creative.

At the end of the two months, we will raffle off prizes for those who have participated in the writing project. Among the prizes will be P10,000 worth of books, cash prizes, and t-shirts. We will officially put up the list of prizes to be awarded in the coming weeks.

But, honestly, this isn’t really about the prizes, it’s all well and good, yes, but at the end of the day, we hope you can join this writing project because you truly want to write about the issues that are affecting The Philippines. To shed light on these issues, should be our number one goal.

Here’s how to join. Just leave a comment. A link to the url where your article is located, or if you don’t have a blog, you can simply email the article to nick (at) tingog (dot) com.

Thank you.

@aajao, thank you for your entry. Interesting really, since lately there has been a resurgence of discussions focused on overpopulation..

hi everyone! i’m actually new hear. stumbled upon your site and found the articles and issues discussed very interesting. although i’m not new to blogging as well, i have such passion and conviction for writing as a way to effect change. so, in the spirit of participation, i’d like to submit a relatively old article i wrote last a few months back. here it is http://rjmarmol.blogspot.com/2007/12/philippines-biggest-problem.html i hope to write another one as second entry. more power to Filipino Voices!

  23. rina says:

hi, i’m not sure how competitive this would be writing-wise, but i’d just like to submit this February post of mine on an issue that’s really close to my heart.

    http://wolverina.wordpress.com/2008/02/05/the-tears-of-sierra-madre/

  24. Nick says:

@rina, it is never about whether or not the articles will win any literary award.. It’s about the issues you feel that is important.. and if it’s close to your heart, then you have met the criteria beautifully..

    Thank you for your submission.

  25. Benj says:

Are all prizes going to be given away by way of raffle, Nick? Or are some prizes going to the most merit-worthy entries?

  26. Nick says:

@Benj, All prizes to be raffled off, except of course the stickers which everyone receives just for participating..

Since this is a writing project, not really a contest, the most important aspect of the project is that the issues are put to light.

In the future, when we do hold a contest, we’ll probably have a ranking system..

But, for now, I think our focus should be the entries and the issues that come along with them..

@Benj, thank you for the heads up. It was caught in the spam filter..

  37. I wrote this back in March when I first read the poverty incidence report of the NSCB. Reading numbers is not easy for most people so I simplified it much here, but if you do the math, it’s pretty much what it comes out too.

    What is 40 Philippine pesos?

That’s in Blogger. There’s a mirror in Multiply— the article is here. The comments there are an interesting read too.

  38. Nick says:

@Hilda, thank you for the submission, we are on the same wavelength here. I too found poverty as probably the greatest issue that we must confront.

40 pesos, it’s a visual that should get people thinking, along with 27 million people under poverty.
