Now that Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons has hit the big screen, the word “Illuminati” will probably be the talk of the movie going crowd. The cinemas were quite full when I saw the movie considering that these are hard times. Nonetheless, Pinoys have their own illuminati.
The word illuminati is Latin plural for illuminatus meaning “enlightened ones”. This comes down to our history as Spanish ”ilustrado” meaning the same thing. The most famous Pinoy illuminati are 1) Jose Rizal, 2) Marcelo H del Pilar, 3) The Luna brothers, 4) Graciano Lopez-Jaena. Nonetheless the medieval and renaissance illuminati are scientists and artists who believed that they were freed from superstition. Our ilustrados obviously believed the same.
Today, a Sunday, I bumped into Father Pedro Galende OSA, curator of the San Agustin Church museum. Father Galende is a friend of my mom and he gave me and my foreign guest a quick tour of the world heritage listed church and monastery. He touched a fair bit on the symbolism of the church.
Well methinks we can have a sort of Dan Brown novel here. Since there are many paintings dealing with Catholic martyrs being beheaded, this could be a symbol. We can even make up a story about the Ayala family burial chapel and that famous memorial to that young sailor killed by Moro pirates. I wonder what we can make out of the symbolism of the Ayala’s burial chapel? The creepy feeling of stepping over the many “lapida” can be part of the plot. BTW we Indios cannot step over the Ayala lapidas. They have their chapel cordoned off!
Too bad, San Agustin is the only renaissance church in Intramuros to have survived World War II. The Franciscan, Dominican and Recollect churches are gone. Intramuros would have been good material for a Pinoy Angels and Demons type of movie. The Manila Cathedral is but a 1950s reconstruction and the symbolism is not medieval but 1950s modern. The only creepy place there is the archbishops’ crypt.
Nonetheless our Pinoy illuminati plot will eventually make the reader come to grips with the dark truth and the trail ends in the Palace. Our Professor Robert Langdon character type will end up facing La Iluminada Gloria! :-)
Well “Angels and Demons” is actually a wicked fantasy. We have an academic saving Holy Mother Church and with it world civilization. But that is indeed extremely fantastical! How can academics save the Roman Church when they even can’t save the University? (first from financial troubles) They had to bring in tycoons like Lucio Tan, Henry Sy and the Ayalas, Gokongweis and Yuchengcos to save the academe.

Well, I suspect it would be difficult to do a movie here that had any kind of sting to it because skins are so thin in places that matter: the legislature, the Church and the law enforcement agencies. People get offended and it is “off with their head”, so Ron Howard in the Philippines would be headless. Plus there is a cost/return formula that works for simple and cheap productions that are advertised well. A US style action movie would cost too much to produce. The market here can’t return value.
