So Chinese Hong Kong’s ‘high-flying’ columnist and vaunted “satirist” Ko Tik a.k.a Chip Tsao is not impervious to public censure after all.
And while his wikipaedia profile tags him as an 8–year veteran of the respected British Broadcasting Corporation, and once wielded his vitriolic pen even against the former chief executive of Hong Kong Tung Chee Hwa, To Kit went to the Philippine Consulate General and bowed contritely before Filipinos.
Not to gloat, there is a lesson here not only for Chip Tsao but for all members of the so-called Fourth Estate.
Stay grounded, be fair, and most of all banish illusions of racial, or intellectual superiority.
We are, after all, only as good as our last story, my elders taught me in my early years.
We must also remember, I submit humbly that the moment we think we have it all figure out is when we will meet our comeuppance, our match.
So Chip Tsao has bowed and so should Philippine society now bow in respect, and take this Chinese Hong Kong man’s apology.
And then let’s look inward and work hard at reversing the mind’s image Tsao has of the Philippines: “a nation of servants.”
Our divisive politics and experience with bad governance continues to weigh the society down not to mention the disaffection of elements like the Abu Sayyaf,
But we must make the right, the intelligent, choices in the 2010 elections so that we can elect new leaders with the heart, the balls, the integrity and respect for the rule of law.
Let us foreswear corruption in all its forms, become the change we want our society to be, and earn our rightful place among the community of nations as a peaceful, prosperous, and proud Philippines.

whats with the bold letters? :D
Emphasis mine.
I don’t mean to be curt. :(
My apologies.
Still trying to shake off intense, albeit unproductive rage over a previous thread.
But seriously, the points I bold-faced are elements I do feel srongly about.
But so many bold sentences, might as well make the whole article bold. Not that it matters though. Just a suggestion.
Noted.
:D
I am absolutely underwhelmed. The Philippines got honorable mention in the G-20 meetings in London through the OECD as not having a savory reputation about the openness of it’s banking system to formal institutional oversight when it comes to possible criminal and/or tax evasion incidents.
Everyone is still focused on this guy with a big mouth. Where are all the presidentiables on this?
Where is Harry Roque and his band of merry men?
Are you saying the Philippines banking system ACTUALLY exhibits “openness of it’s banking system to formal institutional oversight when it comes to possible criminal and/or tax evasion incidents?”
You are absolutely correct. Time to move on from Tsao.
i agree
So James, nothing to say?
galit pa ako, Mr. Ding, galit pa ako.
Kawawa naman si Chip Tsao sa mga mayabang na Pinoy.
“All ye who have no sin, cast ye the First Stone.”
Many did!
Bad KARMA ‘yun.
And ye cannot bow back without first apologizing.
If I were a Servant, I would be proud to come from a Nation of Servants!
There is nothing wrong with being a servant!
DJB,
Foul ! ! !
Part of our psyche to accept in full measure any criticism that our “kakabayan” may spew against us, but we do not tolerate any one from so-called rich countries to insult us. It is alright if I call my brother/sister idiot, but I would be slighted if my rich neighbor would call them the same.
Or it is alright if one spouse would call the other the most pejorative remark as “buwisit” “batugan”, “walang silbi” “gunggong” “palamunin” “walang-hiya” and the other would counter with the same invectices, but take note that you will be sligthed if your rich neighbor would spew the same remark against your spouse.
Ding,
Tsip has already apologized but there are still many of our “kakabayans” who think that Tsip has done nothing wrong against us, or worst would take the position that “we deserved this insult”, or that it was only a satirical piece designed to awaken us and not to insult us. :)
Am proud to be a Servant
In publicly known Nation of Servants
Loathsome become a servant
In a nation of corrupt public servants
Hehehe, you got it right on the head, baycas. If our government officials call themselves servants, who are we, or the gov’t., to complain when called “a nation of servants”?
Ding,
Look at the photo in the post. That’s Chip Tsao, bowing, but UNBOWED, on the left. On the right are all the yabang Pinoy media and strutting gloaters. Oh well, we better not have any typhoons, or earthquakes, or sunken ships, or erupting volcanoes that’ll require help from others this year or next. Heck even the Americans we have been sassing over our mistaken priorities.
I dunno folks. This might not be a good year to become an International Pariah!
We’re lucky that’s what he did. What if he didn’t apologize and cried Freedom… of Speech. Tayo napahiya.
Anong napahiya, sanay na ang karamihan na maging WALANGHIYA.
Papalag sa slur ng Desperate Housewives, panay naman ang bili ng diploma sa Recto. Sigh…. Ang kagunggongan ng bayan ko.
Manong DJB,
I knew your comment was coming, didn’t I?
Did you even take time to read my post?
Because if you did you’d know the post could really have been titiled The Lessons From L’Affaire Chip Tsao.
Do you not note how IU purposely bold faced several mpassages to say how we should, as Filipinos get our act together?
In fact even Benign0 was in me mind when I was writing given the ring of truth in his ‘trademarked’ GetRealPhilippines.
But you are sorely mistaken if you propose that we shake in our boots and dread non-assistance from countries we don’t supplicate ourselves to or offer our humble compatriots to be racially slurred and discriminated against.
And if you assume I am among the “gloaters” you are farthest from the mark.
No Manong.
I want us to bow like Tsao, and bow “unbowed” too, as you say, but proud to have made the point to some presumed satirist who can barely muster a proper, a sincere apology.
I’h even present To Kit a welcome lei assuming he really wants to come to manila as a true friend of the Filipino people.
Claro?
Ding,
Claro naman!
BTW Here is Chip Tsao apology:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM-sgNX1wcI
Strange thing though, he is also supposed to have delivered a message to the Filipinos in Spanish!
Via the guy who writes Undertow
It seems that a PATTERN is emerging here…
First we didn’t like it when some Sit Com twitted our Nation of Doctors and their Medical Schools. Lawyers made a lot of money from Doctors in America who were up in arms and ready to sue the NBC network.
Next, we were not amused at being called a Nation of Sluts represented by Cory Aquino and Angela Merckel by Jon Stewart.
Then there was the Gyrating Filipina English Maid incident, in which no less than the BBC obliged our need for apology over being portrayed as a Nation of Slutty Governesses available for visiting potentates.
Of course we do not want to be called a Nation of Whores (making it non-negotiable that Nicole be vindicated) if only she would cooperate more!
Now this from a Hong Kong columnist and we are once more in insulted mode as a Nation of Servants.
It looks like a case of extremely low self-esteem, or something. Let’s not give in to this! We are better than this. Are we gonna organize a Lynch Mob over every issue that arises in the world?
Re Jon Stewart
i think you are the only one who was offended by that. :) the context of the joke in the daily show was pretty clear, and is not comparable to the chip case
How come nobody in the whole of Pinoy society in Hong Kong, here and elsewhere ever thought of the pie treatment for Chip Tsao? That is so standard in the West as a response to a public insult.
Is it the need for courage to get to within 15 feet of someone and hurl a pie?
Blackshama,
That woulda been better haha. Instead of all this long, protracted public display of angst and stentorian outrage feeding more on itself than the original column. You would think the Chinese Navy invaded Manila and raped all the domestic helpers being servants in a nation of people dependent on servants for everything!
Ding:

Chip Tsao apologized because he felt the power of Pinoy blogs.
EQ
Dean,
Is it just me or are you enjoying yourself with your palpable sarcasm?
“…long, protracted public display of angst and stentorian outrage feeding more on itself than the original column.”
Here you tipped your hand and seemingly show how nonchalant you are about the whole episode.
You appear to be the gloating, IU am sorry to say.
I almost hear you saying, “now you know how it felt when your were pillorying my beloved Daniel.”
Disabuse my impure thoughts, Manong.
Ding,
I’m not referring to you. But check out the rest of the blogosphere man. And what about the PATTERN. that is evidence of something wrong, no?
EQ,
Doesn’t this only open up the Filipinos for more ribbing and joking all over the Anglosphere? — that is the usual fate of the pikon — until they learn to be good sports and maybe, just give tit for tat.
Dean,
Nothing to do at all of being pikon. I will repost a thread in your article in “Praise of Tsip”:
Francis,
You are trying to reduce the issue as a simple case of “tightshirtedness” (pikon). NO sir. It is allright if I call my brother/sister stupid, but I would be slighted if my neighbor would called them the same.
We are not a nation of servants and assuming we are, we try to serve other nations the honest way. Chinese come to the country with paraphernalia of shabu and peddle drugs in our streets. You would be offended if I call China a “nation of “drug peddlers”.
One local chinese was a Marcos frontman. The latter stole from the people and used the chinaman as a dummy. Bongbong came back to get his Dad’s million from this Chinaman.
It would be Unfair if I call China as a nation of “dummy thieves”.
Another local chinese employs thousands of sales ladies for six months. Allows the contracts to lapse. Rehire them after a month or two furloughs to prevent them from becoming permanent employees to save on “sick leave and vacation leave”.
It is unfair if I called China as a nation of “exploiters”.
You know Francis, I have nothing to do with our Pinays going abroad, because I was never a part of this government, but like others who have not done any aggravation that makes our compatriots toe a beeline exit towards other nation’s ports to work as maids, have viewed Mr. Tsip’s article as inherently objectionable and I think you should too.

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Police District (MPD) operatives have arrested a fellow policeman for peddling shabu.
MPD Sta. Cruz Station 3 commander Supt. Romulo Sapitula told reporters Friday they had the erring policeman, PO2 Emil Yanga Tionson, under watch after being tipped off by informants of his drug deals.
Sapitula said they were informed of a drug deal Tionson had arranged last Wednesday in Sta. Cruz, Manila. He immediately ordered a buy-bust operation to be conducted.
At around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Tionson drove his Nissan Sentra car (PPS-370) at the corner of Juan Luna and Yuseco Streets and handed over shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) to two police poseur-buyers.
As soon as the exchange was done, the buyers announced the bust. Sapitula said Tionson then tried to elude arrest by attempting to mow down MPD operatives with his car.
But the two operatives quickly jumped out of the car’s path. Tionson instead hit two vehicles owned by the station operatives.
Arresting officers recovered two large packages of shabu, estimated to total P25,000, drug paraphernalia and a .9 mm caliber pistol from the suspect. They also confiscated the suspect’s car.
Sapitula said he would recommend Tionson’s dismissal from the service as well as the filing before the Manila prosecutor’s office of charges against him

The pattern! the pattern!
Why does it look like we can’t take what we ouselves dish out? I mean, isn’t Miriam Defensor Santiago a member of the Filipino Race?
Did she not do something, far, far worse that Mr. Chip Tsao did with her remarks, on the record, about the origins of Corruption in the civilizations of the world?
Is not the Kettle calling the Pot negro?
I – just don’t mind Webster defining the word ‘Philippines’ a nation of servants.
I also just don’t mind Webster defining the word ‘housemaid’ as Filipina.
Who have really treated their housemaids with all the respect they deserve anyway?
They live in starvation wages when working as our katulongs. Abroad, they think of themselves, however domestic helpers, equal to any other man.
Chip Tsao did not write any satire. We know what a satire when read
one. It was a deliberate insult to Filipinos. It is good he has come
to his senses. Chinese were called Dogs by the British colonialist.
We know what their ancestors had gone thru, he must be also sympathetic
for what the Filipinos are undergoing now.
Our katulongs are just existing. They work for board and lodging and little something to wear decent on their back.
They are virtual slaves. Even the self-righteous church don’t even take the cogwells of their well-being, humane&fair treatment. The church would rather burn GMA because that’s what the pekeng-peryodistas made them to think than shine a light on the plight of our katulongs.
SO FAR, NOT ONE. I REPEAT NOT ONE pekeng-peryodistas took the cause of our local domestic katulongs. And yet took umbridge on Tsing Tsao over verbal satire …
LET’S FIX OUR KATULONGS. ONCE WE DO THAT, THEN, WE’D HAVE A FACE TO ATTACK TSING TSAO …
AREN’T WE WEIRD? OUR PRIORITIES ARE TOTALLY SCREWED UPSIDE DOWN! That’s why we are called Flips!
DOES ANYONE remember during Marcosian time when Marcos was in favor of tearing down Martial Law in a refereendum. Since Marcos was in favor to “yes” to no more martial law, Filipinos voted for “NO”!
Weird talaga!!!! Ewan ko! Once we fix our mind thru lobotomizing our pekeng-peryodistas, Once our pekeng-peryodistas has editorial-freedom … that is the only time we’d be thinking like civilized nations do.
Rene,
If you find time, list down the columnists whose columns you don’t read and those that you do?
Also, those newspapers you don’t even buy and those that you do?
Lastly, tell us in all honesty if you are normal? Just kidding.
that if he ever reads.
Karl, I don’t read them. I scan them. I buy them because they are cheaper than toilet paper. 80% of the columns talk about politics. They rip it, analyze it, evaluate it, scrutinize it as if it was thermodynamics … and lo and behold … they say amen to Ces Drilon kidnapping news blackout!!! They didn’t become legal apologist to Joey de Venecia but became legal technical luminaries on Justice Sabio. They attacked him ferociously. I wonder what’s the diff between the two. Are they fools or are they fooling us?
I don’t dabble in political talk because of unpredictability of mental retardated variables. It’s futile effort. It’s too corrupt!
Maybe i’m too anal. I’m not normal compared to a natural born Filipino. I don’t believe in God. They adore pekeng-peryodistas, I dont. I hate pretentions, they do. I speakengese goot englischtzes that I don’t flount, they do. They drive Coroollas and Civics and SUVs, I still drive my beat-up 1965 bettle top down with my usual regalia of surf stickers and longboard. I wear my hair long, they don’t. I dye my hair a streak of neon green, they don’t becaue it’s weird.
I’m not normal. I do see the future … cuz i’m para-normal. Gotta pop my psychotrophic drug. :)
DJB,
Good that you mention Miriam.
She’d prolly have called Ko Tik “fungus face” or some such monicker. :)
Here’s a good reflection of Sun*Star columnista Nalzaro. He seldom makes logical staement but this one I totally agree. Oh, by the way, don’t mind his stiff neck and ill-fitting shirt and tie. He thinks he looks cool …
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/nalzaro-being-servants
I’m soooo outa here. I’ll troll for another site …
In fact, I’m taking my advocacy to American blogs exposing our plight …
I want to be a Jose Rizal … NO! NO! NO! Not him! Jose Rizal is an appointed Hero by the Americans. I’m not homophobic, I do believe Jose Rizal was gay. His mistress was just a cover-up.
I’ll have my name patented …
Gotta go … i’m sooo outa here … BIG COMPANIES are after me … They call me in the morning and in the evenings … They wanted me … see how important I am? They are American Express. Visa. Discover. MasterCard ….
Nice hanging-out with you guys …. :)
Tsao bows… cool.
Q: How about officials of the farcical Philippine state???
A: MAKAPAL PA RIN ANG MUKHA, AS USUAL! :D
so the guy “bowed”. did it change anything? are we now any less than a “nation of servants’? are we thereby transformed overnight to being a great people?
Exactly! Soooo… shallow and superficial.
Go Supermaids :D – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD3IxxclCxc
bencard,
we may not great people indeed, but atleast we know when we were insulted.. the guy already apologized and took back his generalization that we are at nation of servants, but if you still feel the same way, that we are still a nation of servants i can live with that, but atleast my good friend Tsip, now says that we are not. :)
and why is knowing “when we are insulted” an extraordinary thing? isn’t that a normal thing for any person with a modicum of intelligence? and who is this tsip anyway to merit such a big fuss from a whole nation.
i think we are what we are regardless of what this guy, or anybody else, says about us, and there’s not one helluva thing we can do about that except to change within and among ourselves.
really??? do we really know when we are insulted? how come we keep on voting for idiots, thieves, and morons into congress, and positions of public office.
it’s not only insulting and embarassing to share citizenship with a bunch of gunggongs – it’s disgusting.
With what she has written in her blog in March 3 11.25 am, I admit I have started to fall in love with Ding Gagelonia. I hope she would do appreciate compliment from a Chink!
Thanks.
But I’m a he. :)
Oh, sorry, I should have said I fall in love with what you have written. You have 3 persons in the picture, the one in the center is a lady, isn’t it?
ding,
gives me some dreadful moments thinking that Erichan could be gay. :)
Give me some dreadful moments thinking that jcc has that propensity of thinking gay. :)
By the way, I have gone over the intro in your ” About Us” and got to see the close-up picture of Ding. Oh, you should have posted that pic instead….
But beware, among you, there is someone who declares himself half-Filipino half-Chinese. I suggest you double-check his background for fear that he could be half-Filipino and half-drug-peddler, hehehehehe!
And for that two gentlemen who have that Chinese-sounding surnames, I am sure one is a dummy-of-sort and the other one the labor exploiter-entrepreneur, hehehehehhehehe, that is to apply the formula of substitution I learned in high school Math!
Just wonder why jcc intro is not there, that is supposed to be the most interesting since he does not look like a gay :)
Baka mapikon Ka! Joke lang yan!
Sobrang serious naman dating mo sa picture. Relax ka lang!
The nagging question I have is
“Would a WHITE RACIST AR_EHOLE (e.g. Brit, American) bow to Pinoys in apology?”
I find this Chip Tsao a good chap for being truly Asian in his response. And as Asians we have to accept in good faith.
The truth is that NONE OF THEM is likely to apologise in fear of a lawsuit!
blackshama,
My own take is I’m done with Tsao for now. :)
me too, ding. the guy showed that he is gentleman enough to accept his mistake, a demeanor we Filipinos do not have. no need to subject him to further pillory. his apology has taught as another lesson though, Chinese can show their arrogance and be repentant about it, but we remain defiant and arrogant despite our mistake. could be the reason why chinese is moving on while we lagged behind.
salute to jcc and ding, very nice to see positive comments here, isnt it forgiving and moving on means having a nice day?
Read for introspection Sionil Jose’s ” Why are we a nation of servant” in today’s Star Sunday Lifestyle page H-1. Very fair and objective, no racial slurs! I txtd to all my friends to read!
Enough with the nation thingie.
Read Dave Martinez – reparition the islas de Ladrones del kawatan ..
Okidoki.
Nice to hear for the first time jcc mentioning something good about the Chinese. This makes my morning a very pleasant one. I think I got to change my perception of him now if not to the extent of saluting in appreciation.
So may I quote Mr. Abe N. Margallo: “Tsinoy, Tisoy, Pinoy or Amboy, and as Taipan or Mang Pandoy is really of no moment, if we believe we are all Pinoy-rin. ”
Cheerrrrr!
