What if Dela Paz started this golf melee?

January 3rd, 2009 at 3:43 pm by Patricio Mangubat

Let me parrot my friend and sometimes adversary here at Filipino Voices–Bencard and another colleague based in Australia with the name BenigNO–what’s this overt and highly sensationalized fascination with a feud at a golf course? What with this national fascination over a department secretary and his son who allegedly mauled a private citizen? Conyo is right–there are far more pressing concerns than write something about a private spat which no one actually knows whose side was really right and whose side is really on the wrong? I dare my colleagues–who among you was actually there in the first place? What we wrote came from a spurned source–the alleged beneficiary of this purported “arrogance” displayed by the Pangandamans.

What if this victim is not really the victim and in fact, the instigator of this bugbugan off the golf course? Why is everyone believing the narrations of this alleged victim online when in truth, nobody actually really know what really happened right?

Look at this site—it devoted five different entries talking about the same thing. Whatthe? So what if a mayor’s bodyguards mauled a private citizen? There must be some reason like self-defense, to begin with. The incident report showed that Dela Paz actually poked his umbrella at the mayor. If I’m the security personnel of Mayor Pangandaman, would I not do the same thing? Of course I would. That’s what I’m being paid for in the first place, protect my client from any harm. Definitely, during the melee, someone would get injuried. But, it does’nt mean that it would cause somebody’s job on the line, right? What’s the connection between Pangandaman’s job as DAR secretary and that of Dela Paz? Nothing. Dela Paz is also a known braggart on the course. He always tell people how great his family and his son is. A braggart receiving the brutal end of the stick will always shout to the world that he’s wronged when he probably started the melee himself.

Do we know that there was a second incident where Dela Paz came with his accomplices, bearing batutas, knives and baseball bats? Dela Paz tried to make that Pinoy penchant for “resbak”. So, was he still a victim or an instigator? Dela Paz is not a good witness. He did’nt tell the entire country of this second episode where he came back with thugs to allegedly beat up the younger Pangandaman.

So, why are we still curious what happened? I think the Pinoy being an usisero is really behind all of this fascination with tabloid stories like these. We like to guess who’s the culprit. This is actually “away bata”, yet, we in the blogosphere is writing about it, making it bigger than what it really is. There are more pressing issues, like charter change, the other Dela Paz involved in the Euro scandal, and even this alleged bribery done by parents of the three Alabang boys caught red handed with cocaine. Time to recover from our holiday blues and talk of something more relevant, like ousting Gloria in 2009.

People are so biased… not only biased, they’re being prejudiced and stereotyping Muslims as barbarians all over again. Why so sympathetic over the dela Pazes? Because they’re just “mahihirap” as what Mrs. dela Paz had said on Umagang Kay Ganda”? I didn’t know the poor now knows how to play golf, or that their children go to elitist schools like the Ateneo, or a university in the USA! Mahirap nga sila… mahirap intindihin.

I’ll repost your blog if it’s ok with you.

  2. A real bodyguard should be trained to disarm and immobilize an attacker, not maul him. I’m pretty sure Pangandaman’s military or PNP contingent can grab an umbrella and hold a 56 year old man and his 14 year old son down.

Politicians, especially those in the provinces, have been known to use their bodyguards as private goons. This is a manifestation of that. Regardless whether De La Paz started it, or whether he’s an asshole or not, bodyguards should not go about beating people up.

If De La Paz did, indeed, attack the mayor, then he should’ve been arrested and charged with assault, not mauled.

Oh, and do you actually believe that a guy who was already hit while in the green would call on his WIFE to attack a government official with armed bodyguards?

The way a government official behaves in public is important. Besides, it’s not like he’s an exemplary DAR chief. I’m pretty sure the Philippines can afford to lose him. The question is, can GMA?

    Pat,

Why should be bother? Because this is NOT an isolated event.

  4. Mike says:

I don’t think the bodyguards mauled the Dela Paz’. I think Pangandaman Jr mauled the elder Dela Paz with the bodyguards acting as kibitzers.

Imagine this scenario: Valley Golf incident proves the middle class is capable of its own injustices towards pols. Pols lose job, come out martyr-like, cries on TV. Middle class congratulate themselves. Bloggers celebrate. Pols get sympathy of masses revive political career and win higher government positions (di natin alam matalino pala si pangadaman, while bloggers are treating him like a dumb fuck). Middle class lose the moral high ground. Blogging gets a bad reputation… And we are all DEAD.

  7. JD says:

I would believe so. They were able enough to walk to the clubhouse, they didn’t even bother using golf carts to get to the clubhouse. I don’t think it would be that difficult to pick up a cellphone and call his family for some “resbak”.

I don’t think Mr. dela Paz knew who the mayor was until they got to the clubhouse either. Mr. dela Paz and his family are notorious in Valley Golf, I think the lines “hindi mo ba ako kilala?”
would come more appropriately from someone like the dela Pazes. With children who are members of Jungolf and a scholarship grant holder for an American university, don’t you think he’d be boasting about that?

    Patricio,

OH MY GOD. Finally, SOMEONE WITH BRAINS and GUTS in the Pinoy Blogosphere. I am impressed! I will keep an eye on you.

I was counting on Bakla to have the courage and insight to post something like this but, as usual, he failed to rise to the challenge. Frankly, I am beginning to think he is overrated.

Also, I am surprised that nobody even pointed out the absence of any journalistic standards. If they dont know what this means (and judging from nearly everyone’s excesssively emotional and one-sided reporting, I’m pretty sure most of them dont), let me summarize: get the facts, get both sides of the story, be unbiased.

Did anyone bother to get the other side of the story? Nope. Since the Evil Mayor fit the stereotype of the evil politician, why bother right?

Again, Bakla, being a professional journalist should have been aware of these journalistic standards. Read his December 28 blog post again and tell me if you think this is world class reporting. But that’s okay, nobody is perfect.

So let me tell you what is going to happen next:

Most of you will never admit to any mistakes and continue pretending to be inteligent, fair and balanced bloggers. The word “retraction” is probably not in your vocabulary.

I understand. Denial is a coping mechanism.

And I dont want you guys to really change anyway.

I was with the President for two days, and this was never mentioned,” – and then took his family to a beach resort in Subic Bay, Zambales for “a much needed break” from a thousand bloggers who were calling for his and his son’s heads.

“We’re being condemned left and right. It’s very painful for us. We’re very much affected by this, “They should be sensitive to the feelings of others. The past few days have been very painful for us,” said Big Daddy Pangandaman.

    Boo-hoo.

i’m reposting this for those who missed this out from the other blogpost on the SAME ISSUE. i’m not seeking for sympathy here, but clarity rather.

    —-

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY

Their side has been heard over and over on television, radio and print. The average person who would see, hear and read about their story would indeed feel for them completely, and have nothing but anger and hatred for the other party. I’ve read her blog from her BlogSpot, and they sure sounded like the aggravated party on her blog.

I am posting the incident that happened at the south course of Valley Golf and Country Club that fateful day of December 26, 2008 between the families of Pangandaman and dela Paz. But this is not Delfin’s and his children’s side; I am retelling the details of the incident here on behalf of the Pangandamans.

On December 26, 2008, Friday, at around eleven in the morning, the group of Secretary Nasser Pangandaman registered at the Valley Golf Country Club to play golf. Since there were eight of them playing, they divided into two flights, with the Secretary and his companions on the first flight, and Hussein, Nasser JR and two others on the second. In golf terms, a flight is a division of players within a golf tournament or game. Angelo Pangandaman, Hussein’s eight year old son tagged along with the second flight (Nasser Jr’s), since no one would be able to watch him at the clubhouse.

Nasser Jr and his friend, Farah Locsin arrived late at the golf course and followed their flightmates at Hole No. 4 of the South Course of Valley. It was a convoy of two golf carts, one of which was Nasser Jr’s and the second was the golf marshal’s who was escorting them and the caddies. Here, Bambee narrated in her blog: “My brother and I were playing golf at the South Course of Valley. We were on the 3rd hole, and we see two golf carts going past us, overtaking our flight, and setting up to tee off on the next hole. My dad goes up to them and asks them why they would do that, why they would overtake us without even asking for our permission.” Mr. Delfin dela Paz reacted by protesting at what seemed to be an overtaking of flight, in which Nasser Jr explained to the elder dela Paz that they did not overtook their flight but simply tried to catch up with their flightmates at Hole No. 4. He further explained that they, like the dela Paz’s had earlier lined up to play and were already registered at the flight before theirs. Thinking that things had been cleared up, Mr. dela Paz said, “Okay, kortesiya lang” (”Okay, just seeking courtesy“) .

When the 2nd flight of Nasser Jr. already played hole no. 4 which is a par 3, and Nasser Jr. was still outside of the green trying to pitch his ball into the green, the flight of dela Paz hit their shots into the green which almost hit Hussein without shouting “Fore!”. In golf terms, “fore” is a word of warning yelled out by a player who has hit an errant shot. If your shot is in danger of hitting or landing very close to another player or group of players on the course (for instance, if you slice a ball into an adjoining fairway), you should yell “fore!” to warn players to watch out. Surprised, though sensing trouble which they deemed to choose to avoid, they allowed the other dela Paz player to hit his shot so they can peacefully resume and concentrate on their playing. At this point, the caddy of Nasser Jr also took the 8 year-old Angelo to stay behind the golf cart to avoid being hit by golf balls coming from the dela Paz players.

On Hole No. 5, after the 2nd Pangandaman flight hit their drives into the fairway and before they could hit their second shots, the dela Paz players again hit their drives without warning the Pangandamans. Puzzed and surprised, they asked among themselves why the flight behind them were doing this to them as they could be hit by their (dela Paz’s) golf balls. When Nasser Jr’s flight reached the green of Hole No. 5 and after holing out, they joined the 1st flight of Sec. Pangandaman and took their break at the teehouse. During their break, the marshal approached Nasser Jr, stating that the dela Paz’s were complaining that there were five of them in their group and why they overtook the dela Paz flight. Nasser Jr. reiterated to the marshal what he had already explained to the elder del Paz, to which his knowledge the former had already accepted his explanation. Unconvinced with what the marshal had relayed that there were only four and not five in their flight and that they did not overtake as they just went back to the clubhouse and later join their flight, the elder dela Paz approached Nasser Jr, obviously agitated at this time and pointed a finger at him and accusing him that there were two carts in their flight and that they (Nasser Jr) overtook them. This confused the younger Pangandaman, as he had already explained back at Hole No. 4 that they did not do so. He asked in a most respectful manner that he thought that they already had an understanding. Mr. dela Paz at the top of his voice accused him that Nasser Jr was wrong and began shouting profane words at the younger Pangandaman, saying, “P***** i** ka! Member ka ba dito, ha? Hindi mo ba ako kilala?” (”S.O.B! Are you even a member here? Don’t you know who I am?!”) In a calm voice and without revealing that he is the Mayor of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, Nasser Jr respectfully asked Mr. dela Paz why he was raising his voice at him when they were not arguing. The elder dela Paz reacted “Ikaw ang naghahanap ng away!”(”You’re the one looking for a fight!”), while pulling his umbrella and thrusted the pointed part and hit the belly of Nasser Jr, who backed up. This incident happened in front of the marshal who tried to interevene, but Mr. Delfin dela Paz pressed on, thus prompting Nasser Jr’s older brother Hussein, to come to his brother’s defense. Mr. dela Paz hit Hussein on the forehead and the two engaged in a fist fight.

Meanwhile, Nasser Jr., tried to prevent the two younger dela Paz from joining the fight but they got away from him and went in between their father and Hussein. The dela Paz siblings were able to hold Hussein preventing him to reach the elder dela Paz as if trying to pacify the two. Yet, Bino Lorenzo dela Paz kept punching Hussein in the face and Marie Dhel dela Paz from behind kept on scratching his face. At one point Mr. Delfin dela Paz even got a golf club driver and tried to hit Husseinbut Mr. Rene Maglanque was able to pry the club away from him. When Hussein turned his back on the elder dela Paz, Bino then got a golf club and tried to attack Hussein, but Nasser Jr was able to block Bino with his left arm, but hit his left hand. Sec. Pangandaman, Rene Maglanque, and another golfer from a different flight pacified everybody and asked the dela Paz’s to just leave them to prevent further trouble. Mr. Delfin dela Paz called someone in his cellphone and gave orders to come to the clubhouse because they’ve just had a fight with someone.

The dela Paz’s then left the golf course. Losing interest in the game as it was spoiled by the fight, both Sec. Pangandaman’s and Nasser Jr’s flights also returned to the clubhouse after about ten minutes. Hussein, attaining a bump on the forehead due to a punch by Mr. Delfin dela Paz and scratches on the face and neck, hurried to the men’s locker room to relieve himself and wash his wounds from the scuffle. But Mr. Delfin dela Paz blocked his path to the locker room and told him in a threatening voice that it wasn’t over between them and that he’ll take revenge. Hussein, obviously still angry from the brawl that ensued at the golf course asked why they still hadn’t left yet, when Bino again, pleaded not to hurt his fifty-six year old father, and him who’s fourteen, but with fists ready to punch. The Secretary’s elder son was engaged in another scuffle with the father and son followed by Marie Dhel, who came from behind Hussein, scratching him on his right cheek, neck, ear, while pulling and tearing his shirt.

The security and other golfers in the clubhouse who witnessed the encounter separated them, and as soon as that happened, Mr. dela Paz again shouted invectives at Hussein. Around this time, a loud commotion was heard by the entrance; it was Mrs. dela Paz and her two sons. The sons had with them baseball bats, and Mrs. dela Paz, in a house dress (duster), had with her a bladed weapon, all three looking as if ready to assault. The other golfers and security held them off so as to completely stop the fight. At this point, Sec. Pangandaman told his sons to leave already and the dela Paz’s to stop and leave, so that no more untoward incident would happen. The Pangandaman’s party had to leave through the parking exit because the dela Paz family was waiting for them at the clubhouse lobby.

I’m pretty sure that most, if not everyone, has already read the blog that Bambee dela Paz posted on her blog page. And I’m pretty sure that most, if not everyone totally sympathizes with the dela Paz family regarding the mauling incident allegedly initiated by the Pangandamans. But may I ask, before those hurtful comments were hurled at the DAR Secretary, the mayor of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, the rest of their family, and Muslims as a whole, did the people even bother for just a second to think what the other side had to say? Did they even bother getting information from the Pangandaman’s camp after reading Bambee dela Paz’s blog? I BET THEY DID NOT.

I just have a couple of more questions. If Mr. dela Paz and his children have been playing golf for such a long time now, then they should know their golf etiquette by heart now. If they are professional players, then why did they hit their drives WITHOUT giving any warning to the flight before them? Isn’t it a given to golfers to shout “Fore!” to players who may be potentially hit by the ball since they are in the way of it? Could they have forgotten to warn them TWICE?

Weren’t they supposed to NOT hit their drives unless the golfers before them are OUT OF THE GREEN?

And since it was a holiday, why did the dela Paz flight pushed to play on the golf course when A FLIGHT OF TWO IS PROHIBITED TO PLAY ON THE COURSE DURING HOLIDAYS as per club regulations? Does that mean they are exempted from the rules and regulations of Valley Golf and Country Club?

How can they claim that their flight was overtaken by Nasser Jr’s when they had registered to play on a flight before the dela Paz’s? Do you think the marshal will even escort Nasser and his friend to the golf course if that was really the case?

Why would Nasser Jr complain to the marshal about the dela Paz’s alleged slow playing as stated on reports when his flight is BEFORE theirs?

Why did Bambee leave out the part of what happened at Holes 4 and 5 and just continued her blog on the teehouse? Could she have forgotten to put in her blog that she was also part of the brawl on the course and hurt the older Pangandaman son? Your nails must be pretty long, Ms Bambee, those cuts dug in deep into Hussein’s skin.

Would Bambee even bother blogging about the incident that took place in Valley Golf had they had a tip-off with some other Christian elitist and not Muslim politicians like the Pangandamans? Would the media and the public pick up the story and show the same volume of sympathy for the dela Paz family if the other party concerned were just average, private Non-Muslim citizens?

Would the public still claim Mr. Delfin dela Paz and his children to be brave and courageous people if they had known that they already have a record of run-ins with other patrons of Valley Golf?

Do you seriously think that a person who works as a public official would actually put his reputation on the line over a game of golf regardless of faith or be for or against the administration?

Why are your statements inconsistent, Mr. dela Paz? Reports from different sources seem to vary. From what I know, a person who has had a traumatic experience has vivid recollections of the events that took place.

Like they said, it all started from a small misunderstanding. Had Mr. dela Paz accepted the explanation given to him by Nasser Jr. back at the course then none of this would have happened. This isn’t a case between an underdog and the powerful and mighty. This is a case between right and wrong. The dela Paz family claim that a lot of people have witnessed what took place. That’s what the Pangandaman family think too. Let those people speak up then! But to make quick judgments and accusations against the Pangandmans, politicians, and even Muslims in general, without enough knowledge and proper basis regarding both sides of the issue is just ridiculous and shows ignorance on your part. I am, just like everyone, am praying for this to be resolved.

The truth WILL prevail. Justice WILL be served.

—if this post doesn’t clear a little cloud on your head or your heart, then I doubt if there would still be PEACE between us (Christians and Muslims.) Coz clearly, nothing we say ever gets heard. . . if ever heard, you guys often take it wrongly. Try to take a shot at listening to us, we’re not evil pinheads, we’re Muslims… human beings. We’re not always as bad as the media projects us to be.

    Pat,
Ousting pangandaman is relevant to the 2004 presidential election. The publicity generated and perceived injustice will add to the many factors already destabilizing GMA’s regime. What exactly does GMA owe from DAR chief? Maybe Pangandaman Sr. was the best architect of the 2004 election operation in Lanao del Sur? of course, Gloria cannot just fire him?

The people must demand and put more pressure on Gloria for his resignation not only for Bambee’s family but for the sake of the many poor, the farmers.

Pat, if you don’t find this issue relevant to our economic situation such as the lack of Rule of law , Abuse of Power and Human Rights ( all forgotten) and the much needed aggressive agrarian reform , then am not sure if you will get many followers to support your cause to oust Gloria. I’d rather help the farmers get their land and Bambee’s family to experience justice and learn from their own side of mistake.

Pat, the farmers are in your side if you will at least blog about it to help their cause.

“Rolando Flores, president of the Villareal-Caranoche Farmers’ Association, said action of the farmers was an act of self-installation in view of repeated failure by the Department of Agrarian Reform to install them in the property, which they claimed to own for the past 10 years based on the certificates of landownership award issued in 1997 and 1999.”

  18. Jose C. Camano jcc says:

    Leytenian,

Not that I am against the farmers. But the CARP is the greatest larceny committed against the landowners.

There are plenty of uncultivated lands that the government should have distributed to the landless but under Marcos Land Reform Program was more of a political propaganda and under the succeding administration a knee-jerk reaction to appease the farmers.

Giving the land to farmers under CARP carries a responsibility of amortizing those lands to Land Bank and Land Bank to pay the landowners for the confiscated lands. These farmer beneficiaries had failed in their responsibility because they treated the distribution as dole-outs from the government and therefore it has bankrupted Land Bank with funds to pay the landowners.

The land reform program which was designed to free the farmers from enslavement from the few who controlled the land and make them proud and self-reliant had only instilled in the farmers the attitude of mendicancy and dole-out mentality.

  19. thegreatest says:

    JCC,

As a former landowner who the govt forcibly relieved of his property for 1/20th its real value, I must agree. CARP is used by government as an axe over our heads, which fails miserably when the landowner has ties to government.

As for ~both sides of the story~, I believe both sides ARE being aired by at least the responsible bloggers and in traditional media, the problem is now of credibility. IF the Pangandamans had a history of trustworthiness and competence, that should not be a problem right?

    FROM PINOYGOLFER.COM

I just spent some time with the head of the fact-finding committee. He has submitted all pertinent facts to the board and leaves it to them to make the necessary decision based on all the facts. I will outline the facts to you as it was outlined to me. Rest assured that the facts were obtained from all parties involved and all witnesses at each incident site. The statements were obtained both by the valley fact-finding group and by the NBI as well. Testimonies were recorded, verified, and re-verified. Fortunately for the parties involved, there were always witnesses to give supporting statements on the events as they occurred.

I will compose the outline shortly as it will be lengthy but just to whet your appetite or get you thinking, you will be quite surprised with the findings. Let’s put it this way, the people we thought of as villains weren’t quite what they were depicted to be. and the supposed protagonists may have yet been quite as factual in their testimony as it turns out to be. Even our 14-year old isn’t as innocent and “prayerful” when all the details come out. just give me a few minutes….

In the interest of making sure that no facts might be left undisclosed, I will take it upon myself to start from the very beginning. Firstly let us start by saying that on or at about 12:40 p.m., the party of the Pangandaman’s registered at the starter’s area. They registered for 2 flights comprised of 4 individuals per flight. Unfortunately, they still had 2 members of their group that had not yet arrived, so they initially tee’d off as 2 successive threesomes. The starter and marshall were informed that the 2 individuals that had not yet arrived would just catch up with them in the fairway. On or at about 1:05 p.m. the Dela Paz group registered initially as a twosome but since this isn’t normally allowed, they registered as a 3-some even if the elder Mr. Dela Paz was not really going to play.

When the Dela Paz 3-some was playing on hole number 3, they were passed by 2 golf carts containing Mayor Pangandaman and his companion (in one cart) and the caddies being brought by one of the starter personnell. The Pangandaman’s did not ask permission to drive through because they did not want to disturb the Dela Paz’s who were in the middle of the fairway. Upon reaching the green of the 3rd hole, Mr. Dela Paz asked the caddie why the people in the cart just went through. Mayor Pangandaman who was already positioned at the 4th hole, personally informed Mr. Dela Paz that they were part of 2 foursomes. At this point, Mr. Dela Paz said “ah okay, courtesy lang naman”. This was verified by the caddies. Mr. Pangandaman said that he did not disturb them anymore because the player was about to hit. At this point, Mayor Pangandaman thought everything was okay so he proceeded to the 4th hole (Par 3) where his other flightmates were. In the records it says that Mr. Pangandaman was not yet even done pitching into the green when a ball landed near his 8-year old child so they immediately made sure the child was secured in the cart. ( For those unaware of the common practice at Valley Golf, on every par 3, the group behind you is signaled to hit into the green once everyone from your group is already on the green) Until you have been cleared to hit by the group ahead, you should not hit into the green. It is common sense and basic precautionary procedure.

In this particular case, we have no corroborative testimony. One set of caddies say they were given clearance, while the other say that no clearance was given as of yet when the ball/s had landed.

The Pangandaman’s claim that the same situation happened in the 5th hole (Par5). Even the caddied confirmed this. At this time, Bambee Dela Paz had called the Marshall to tell him that the flight behind them was complaining about why their pace was slow and that the cause of the delay was the 5-some in front of them. Shortly thereafter, a marshall on his motorcycle appeared and approached the Pangandaman’s and asked if they were playing as a fivesome to which the Mayor said no. “We are 2 foursomes”. Nonetheless, the Pangandaman’s had already agreed among themselves that they would rather the Dela Paz’s play through. The Mayor was even quoted saying to his Father. ” magagaling yung mga bata at malakas pumalo, baka mabagalan sa atin” They informed the marshall that they would just let the Dela Paz group play through and the marshall informed the Mr. Dela Paz of this. ( Just as an aside, the investigative group actually asked the group behind Dela paz if indeed they had complained about the slow down and the group said that the y said no such thing to the Dela paz flight. They were not even in contact at anytime before they arrived at the tee house to see the fight and eventually help stop it) When the Delapaz group reached the green of hole 5, the caddies of the 2 kids gave them their drivers so that they would waste no time playing through. The Mayor, who at that time was sitting along with their companions, stood up to personally tell Mr. Dela Paz to play through. Caddies, and the tee house server claim that the Mayor told Dela Paz na “Mauna na ho kayo” and walked to approach Dela Paz, The response of Dela Paz was “Huwag mo akong pagtaasan ng boses” Dela Paz began to question the Mayor why they were playing as a fivesome. The Mayor said that this was not the case but Dela Paz was insisting and even said (again corroborated by the caddies) “Linoloko mo ba ako?” “Member ka ba dito, Kilala mo ba ako?” (as you can see, this question did not come from Pangandaman. In fact, in the recorded testimony, this is exactly what Pangandaman claimed delapaz had said to him and yet in Delapaz’ recorded statement, he never said that the mayor asked him ” kilala mo ba ako” Completely different from when the media was already involved.

When Delapaz was posing the above question, the mayor was heard to say. “Sandali lang, hindi naman tayo nagaaway dito. Akala ko ba naayos na natin yung issue kanina sa hole 3? At about this point Delapaz closed his umbrella and then poked the mayor on his stomach using the pointed end ( some caddies say Dela Paz swung the umbrella and some say that he poked the Mayor) The investigative board asked Dela Paz what he did, he said that he poked the Mayor in self defense. When asked who was attacking him, Dela Paz said that he was being surrounded by 4 men. The caddies and other witnesses on hand said that when the umbrella incident happened, it was only Dela Paz and the mayor that were talking. The other parties were in the tee house about 15-20 yards away. The Mayor says he was poked and so he backed off and just as he was about to be poked again, his brother, Hussein ran and attacked Delapaz and hit Delapaz knocking him to the ground.( At this point the commotion took place. One of the things observed is 14-year old Bino hit the Mayor with his driver. Apparently, the mayor parried with his forearm and hand so this is where he sustaned the injury. In the process also, Hussein was being pulled off the older dela paz by his 2 children but again Bino was seen to hit Hussein in the face and head while Bambee had scratched the other side of Husseins face. At this time also, witnesses say, that 3 or 4 other members of the flight excluding the Secretary, the 8-year old boy, and the girlfriend of Hussein were involved in attacking or subduing the older dela paz but this lasted very shortly and when the combatants had been separated the existing people in the tee house as well as the new flight that was playing behind the dela paz’s.

At this point the Secretary told the delapaz group to leave so as to avoid any more trouble. As the elder delapaz was leaving he was heard calling someone on his cellphone saying ” may away kami, pumunta kayo dito”
No one knew who delapaz was speaking to as he walked away towards the main clubhouse. A few minutes later, the secretary and his group decided to end the day instead of continuing to play. When they got to the clubhouse, Hussein wanted to wash up because he was bleeding in the neck area. As he got near the reception area, he saw delapaz and was heard to have said “O, nandito pa pala kayo” to which Dela Paz said “Hindi pa tapos ito gaganti pa kami”. At this point, Bino got in between his Dad and Hussein while saying ” Tatandaan ka namin” (None of the witnesses in the clubhouse, and there were many, ever saw Bino kneel and say that he was only 14 years old at maawa na sila) On the contrary, Bino was acting like anything but a helpless child. He sounded tough, angry, and antagonistic enough that the fight broke out again. At this point, the bodyguards of the Mayor ran into the clubhouse via the poolside entrance. When questioned about this, the mayor said that one was his driver and the other was his “Yayo”. As far as the board was concerned, the “Yayo” was also a bodyguard. Said Yayo came into the clubhouse with a clutchbag containing a gun and brought out the gun without pointing it at anyone. The Mayor immediately instructed him that there was no need for guns and the gun was put back. During the investigation, the Mayor said that the handgun was his and that his “yayo” was likely going to give it to him but he declined. Upon instructing his “yayo”, the man just stayed in one corner. At this time the wife of Dela Paz and his other son arrived. The son was wielding a baseball bat and the wife had a knife which she pulled out of a scabbard. These two were subdued by security but they were verbally threatening the Pangandaman’s during this time. There was also a reported incident where the driver of the mayor ran out and came back with a suitcase containing a supposed armalite as claimed by valley security. The driver never pulled it out or pointed it at anyone but it was readily accesible

There is something in the Pangandaman side’s posts that is missing in the fact-finding committees report.

Was the son of Hussein Pangandaman actually registered becuase he couldn’t be left at the clubhouse alone?

Because if the son was actually registered; that would make one flight a group of 5 (at least on paper)

This new media format is great. An altercation in a golf course between two families has raised so much fuss amongst so many in the new media.

Why the fuss anyway? Family/clan interests have always superceded or transcended community or the common interest in the Philippine social setting.

That is why they call it the feudal culture. The aristocrats, the political aristocracy combined with the military/police aristocracy rule the country. All supported by a retarded and conservative Catholic Church more suited for a bygone age.

Unfortunately a family (Aristocrat wannabe) banged up against another of the aristocrats and you had friction.

Notice how the family called for familial reinforcements to do battle in the gold course.

Country interests have always been subservient to family interests. That is the social system and structure based on the economic base.

All those Pinoys who live in the more modern societies naturally will be shocked but this is normal in the country.

Jumping the line and the class based, money based rule of law is normal.

An entitlement system that has gone berserk.

The system has created its own social constituencies that wittingly or unwittingly perpetuate the same system.

Family exceptionalism still rules the country. Common or collective interest is still a idea or concept that still has to be learned.

That is why we still revere persons and not their ideas…..The rote based schooling system serves as the effective thought control process that discourages insights and critical thinking.

It will naturally implode some day. Hubris always does. Unfortunately the we and us refers to clans almost exclusively.

  34. Amadeo says:

Fox News would call this “fair and balanced” reporting in FV. Especially because many of us know so little of both parties, it becomes necessary to expose to light all attendant and relevant facts before making judgments. Especially from making harsh general judgments against entire classes – like of politicians or minorities like Muslims.

So why don’t we make a deal, you up there in MM try to learn as much as you can about the delaPazes and I shall do my darn best to learn about the Pangandamans who come from our part of the country and who have close ethnic ties with a number of us living here?

If the younger Pangandaman did go to school and has a checkered past here in Cagayan de Oro as claimed by one embittered commenter who also went to school here, then we can also verify that in a fair and dispassionate way. And since the Pangandaman family appears very fond of golf, then we can also verify how they behave or are regarded by their golfing peers here, because of my having a lot of acquaintances and relatives who are also avid golfers.

BTW, Cagayan de Oro is now such a cosmopolitan area peopled by many ethnic Muslims, including Maranaos, coming from the Lanao provinces and as far away as Cotabato and Zamboanga. We here would like nothing better than making this emergent commingling as peaceful and seamless as far as co-existence goes.

A little trivia. The name Pangandaman, if translated literally from Bisayan means “to provide for”.

As KrisA would intone, deal or no deal?

Footbolero, rge and I were present when the head of the fact finding committee was describing the testimonies of all parties – including that of dela paz. We were not provided with the official written findings – we were simply told some facts that were pertinent to the incident.

my memory isn’t as good as rge but the “discussion” points were as follows:

    1) Based on witnesses’ accounts, Dela paz clearly started the fight. In his own words – “hinampas ko yung payong.” Others used words by Pagdamanan, caddies, were “poked” “tusok” etc. Dela paz used the word “hinampas” – and its on tape.

    2) On the 6th tee, during the “fight” Bino swung his driver at the mayor. There was medical evidence provided to the committee of a fracture to his hand. If a 5′6, 140lbs person swung a driver at me, I am pretty sure I will not be asking his age before I strike back (assuming I survive of course) – and strike back I will with intent to make sure he doesn’t swing that driver again.

    3) Dela Paz didn’t give Valley employees and security staff a chance to stop the incident from escalating. Per witness accounts, the dela paz family kept provoking and making threats na “gaganti sila”.

Jovi, if you want to get the whole story – come to valley golf club and make your own investigation and interview the witnesses. RGE is making kuwento and is not a member of the fact finding committee. Majority of the members/employees at Valley know what happened and very few if any are on the dela paz camp.

You are basing your facts too much on a blog and not on actual witness accounts.

These days one can be a blogger, jury, and executioner. Recently an incident occurred in a golf club somewhere in Antipolo wherein two families figured in an altercation, the family of DAR secretary Nasser Pangandaman Sr. and that of businessman Delfin dela Paz of Pampanga. A member of the dela Paz family blogged the incident on the web and soon the story caught fire in the Filipino blogosphere. Bambee dela Paz cried injustice against her family. There’s no problem with that. The issue is that in her demand for justice, injustices are being heaped on the other party, the Pangandamans. Everyone knows that there’s a b-side to every story (to quote Eli Buendia), yet people seem to have already judged that all the blame falls squarely on the Pangandamans without hearing from their side. Bambee wrote very convincingly on her blog that readers deemed it that her account should be above scrutiny. Did she include every detail of the incident, such as that her father allegedly first said “p_____i__mo!” to Nasser Jr., and the bat and the icepick weilded by other dela Pazes? (By the way, consider yourself lucky if no harm befalls you when you say such things about a Muslim’s mother). Everyone’s calling for the Pangandamans’ heads to roll. In her blog posters hurled abuse, threats, and expletives ( and insulted the women folk of the Pangandamans) with impunity against the other side, followed by a blanket “Thank you” from the blog owner, as if to approve of the posters’ vile invectives. What a blatant display of bullyism that they claim to condemn! One of the posters even threatened to send the Ilagas – the Muslim-killing savages- to go after the Pangandaman clan, no doubt because they are Muslims. What a warped sense of justice! Where is the due process? There has yet to be an adjudication of this matter in a court of law, until then both sides have the right to be heard and explain their side. People quickly accuse the Pangandamans of excesses sans full and impartial investigation of the incident- baka nga dahil Muslim sila, at taga Mindanao- betraying their own prejudice and lack of justice- of which they are violently clamoring for.

Fortunately for the parties involved, there were always witnesses to give supporting statements on the events as they occurred.

i now wonder what is take of the de la pazes and their apologists on this?

At this time, Bambee Dela Paz had called the Marshall to tell him that the flight behind them was complaining about why their pace was slow and that the cause of the delay was the 5-some in front of them. can’t the de la paz apologists find the irony of it all eh?

i really love to hear the side of those who condemned the pangandamans to hell.

  45. Pat, As you may note in a follow-up post, I specifically noted that by their actions the feuding family’s scandalized the already suffering Filipino.

The point being made, sepeculatively, unless anyine can tell me if the NBI probe has been completed, that the Dela Pazes “started the fright” misses the point entirely.

Now even allowing your speculative point ang following it to conclusion, who finished the fight? who ended up bloodied and bowed? ARE WE NOwW SAYING THE PANGANDAMANS, PUBLIC OFFICIALS AS THEY ARE WITH GUN-WIELDING SECURITY MEN DRAWING THEIR GUNS THE VICTIMS STILL? BTW Pangandaman used the DZMM program of his Cabinet colleague, VP Noli De Castro to “appeal to bloggers” to give them “a break.”

The playing has been leveled right?

While they are peddling their side they might as well mobilize their own bloggers or even launch a website. Heck they can buy the whole Internet if they so wish, the warlords that they are.

    3. Impeach GMA, again

    See you at Starbucks

    Ha ha ha!

Number 1 is probably the most important Cha Cha amendment in the 1987 Charter. We can either define

Marriage is between a man and a woman only

    or

Marriage is between two persons only.

and present this to the people in a plebiscite

Many people are fixated on the contraception thingy! hahahahahahahahA!

Number 2: The Iglesia Filipina Independiente and the Episcopal Church in the Philippines have had women priests for over 10 years now!

Number 3. Impeach GMA is the most irrelevant thing that one can do in 2009. Haven’t you and Patricio Mangubat ever read your Revolution?

hi guys, i’m a proud member of valley and i was there when that incident happened. For those of you wondering, Valley is doing their own investigation and has been interrogating witnesses on what really happened. The main reason why Valley hasn’t come out with a statement yet is because they want to finish the whole investigation process first. They don’t want to give out a false statement about the situation which in my opinion is the right thing to do.

Also, I just like to ask everybody to not believe everything you read in the newspaper. Atleast, let’s be fair. Just want to remind everybody that the article in the newspaper was Mr. De La Paz’s statement. And since I was there when it happened, and after reading the article this morning, the story lacked a lot of key details that I’m sure Mr. De La Paz will never tell the media. I agree to some that what happened was awful for our club and for golf. But i also believe that we should be fair…there’s always 2 sides of the coin.

I will not reveal the other version of the story (if you want to call it that but just want everybody to know that I don’t even know mayor pangandaman personally), the other version came from club employees who witnessed the incident from hole #6 up to the clubhouse. I’d rather wait for Valley to give out their statement and I really hope that they do to clear any misconceptions.

It’s sad that this had to happen…really wish that it didn’t…

    LEGAL BEDROCK

THE RULE of law can be defined as a system in which the laws are public knowledge, are clear in meaning, and apply equally to everyone. They enshrine and uphold the political and civil liberties that have gained status as universal human rights over the last half-century. . . . Perhaps most important, the government is embedded in a comprehensive legal framework, its officials accept that the law will be applied to their own conduct, and the government seeks to be law-abiding.

Facts: In the Philippines, what’s happening is exactly the opposite. this blog cannot support the facts

Do not believe sa pulis na pogi. His side of story is a MYTH and it does not also support the facts

  53. Facts says:

Rule-of-law reform will succeed only if it gets at the fundamental problem of leaders who refuse to be ruled by the law. Respect for the law will not easily take root in systems rife with corruption and cynicism, since entrenched elites cede their traditional impunity and vested interests only under great pressure.

The Pangandamans cannot serve right for this country. they can only serve terror and intimidation for the people.

the bombing in Iligan .. there also maranaos who was also victims. why blame it on us? you dont have proofs its really the maranaos who did the bombing. there was also floating report it was done by military for incoming Martial Law? walang baliw na terrorist na babalic sa scene and plant bomb to cause chaos again. and the terrorist is plain stupid if he dress up like Tabligh or the white dress of muslim. many maranaos was illegally captured/detained because of prejudices and bias towards muslims.

When the rule of law is broken, there is no possibility to implement human rights standards.
When the word of the king alone ( hindi niyo ako kilala) is law there is also no possibility of protecting human rights.

To implement the rule of law, education for the people to voice out their frustration is crucial for democracy. It is also appropriate for the pangandamans to sacrifice for their country and resign from their own cruelty as requested by many.

When rule of law is abused by our own representatives, our country will not produce the desired results for economic growth.

This is exactly the reason why I hate this family feud to be discussed further in the blogworld. Everybody talking is not really an eyewitness to the melee but based their talking point on second hand account. This will just go back in forth and who has the truth blah blah…. I m begining to feel now that its not really the warring parties that are embarassing the country to the world anymore but the people who keep on trivializing the whole incident making it a national issue, kesyo injustice daw, kesyo race bias, kesyo class wars, may relgious angle etc etc. Diosco! This actually a personal incident between the two groups of players that should simply just be settled in court.

Just why oh why pinatulan ng husto eto ng media? Dahil ba one of the person involved is related to the adminisitration and those rabid anti Gloria immediately saw it as another way of embarrassing her? Aminin!

  68. turt;e says:

hmm.. siguro kya ang dami nring nagcomment sa case na to dahil hindi bago yung incident, and maybe just maybe, this time, hindi na mangyyre yung mga nangyre na ang mga nasa may position yung nangaabuso, na laging nananalo and yung nabiktima, wlang nagawa. sa case na to, ang de la paz yung biktima, syempre kase sila yung bugbog eh. It’s just really how the people reacted knowing what the status of our politicians have. Sensitive na kasi ang mga tao ngayon. We really can’t blame the people who gave their comments out, not that I am one of them, of course I am one of them.. I, just like them, is just trying to protect and keep what is left for us in this country. I mean, hindi n bago yung issue na ang politicians eh abusado.. di ba? ayun lng. It’s the issue of right and wrong. At least ngayon, politicians should now be overcautious of their moves, because people are really guarding.

The dela paz family kung victim nga sila (kung ang kabilang panig naman ay lumabag sa batas they) can just go to court. They can very much afford an expensive lawyer di ba. They dont need to get the attention of the whole world and emebarass everybody including themselves just to get the justice that they wanted. They can just quietly go to court have their agressor pay for the crime that they believe was comitted to their family…

It just doesn’t makes sense at all!

  70. Leytenian says:

The people have been voiceless for so long. Now the blogosphere is a medium to express. It’s still young and it needs to grow more for some. There’s nothing wrong with the debate. The on-going publicity may correct the wrongs of others and may open our country to real democracy. Let the politician be bothered by it. Let them deal with it and experience it.
Let them explain and rebuild their credibility, character and conduct of public service.

Express yourself. Let it out even more. This case is a perfect Bang for the new Year.

  71. Truce says:

Just Another Classic Case of Malingering Disorder

Having read, heard and seen in print, radio and tv on this bruhaha, I would say that the truth is now slowly unfolding. For awhile it was only the De La Pazes’ side lording over the news. Anyone who takes their (De La Pazes) statement (at face value) would certainly think of the Pangandamans as the evil ones. The more cerebral people can only probe deeper and gather facts from all sides possible.

The De La Pazes side is everywhere. There’s very few written by the Pangandamans.

I am drawing my opinion from how the whole incident took place as gathered by authorities in Valley Golf and as seen by the people who were present during the incident. I commend Valley Golf for suspending both parties. If the Pangandamans are indeed influential, then suspending them wihtout batting an eyelash is such a valiant and bold step to fairness and objectivity.

If indeed the De La Pazes are blameless, why don’t they get the support of Valley Golf? Why do their fellow golfers say that the elder De La Paz have finally found his match? There are still a lot of not-so-pleasant words said about the De La Pazes by their fellow golfers but I am not about to dwell on them.

This incident shows another sad fact of parenting failure. Just why would any responsible parent pick a fight in front of his kids? Just why can’t any responsible parent exercise prudence and just spare his kids from trouble?

I am even sadder that the youth can bend truths and blog about lies just to cover up an elder’s misdoings.

Sure, some people have finally gained fame on that incident. I just hope it’s worth it.

Don’t be fooled nor used. Please try to reasearch on “Malingering Personality Disorder”. Some personalities in this incident fit into it.

  72. there’s no amount of “other side story” that will change the perception of the people that this country is ruled by incompetent politicians.

The Pangandamans are in deep trouble. Karma is the beginning of no end.

    the bigger trouble:
“The real issue here is the political will of this government to implement genuine agrarian reform. We dare Secretary Pangandaman, our brother from Mindanao, to put an end to this lingering arduous issue, and give us hope for a better future for our children,”

    My comments:

If the current version is compared to the earlier version, one will miss the “colorful” language and a revealing fact, which shows it has been edited and sanitized.

In summary, I couldn’t find the following anymore:

    • But I guess the world IS fucked up, and the mayor is too,
    • end this bullshit
    • piece of jackshit -fuckin’ asshole
    • WHAT THE FUCK?!
    • He was FUCKIN’ CRYING
    • The relentless fuckhead mayor
    • (who I swear is ANOTHER fuckin’ idiot)
    • My mom had a miniature baseball bat with her, and my older brother had a real one, and they lunge to attack.
    • And what is this selfish son of a bitch now?
    • The world is fucked up

It is obvious, the piece has been edited.

What this means is the whole story was not told here. The physical violence is, of course, abominable but if this is the kind of “colorful” language that was used, then it would really be difficult to restrain oneself.

The portion deleted that the brother attacked with a baseball bat, that’s very telling. The fact that it was removed means the blog was too frank and honest to serve the purpose of making oneself the total victim.

    My take.

So sorry, Bambee, you just lost your credibility.

  74. In 2007 : Install farmers, fire Pangandaman

This is to show that the pangandamans has no credibility or whatsoever. The farmers continue to complain even until now.

The request for resignation is not only coming from bambee’s supporters but also coming from the very poor.

“BACOLOD City: Farmers on their 17th day of hunger strike in front of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) central office in Quezon City called on President Arroyo to take the responsibility to install them at Hacienda Velez-Malaga and fire Secretary Nasser Pangandaman for being unfit in his job.”

Florenda Hilario, 48, said installing them is a responsibility of the President since Pangandaman as Cabinet secretary is her alter ego.

“Whatever Pangandaman does reflects on the President’s policy and governance. If she is a sincere leader, she will look into our case and take action,” Hilario said.

“Kahiya-hiya para sa isang pangulo ang ginagawa sa amin ng kanyang kalihim, kaya dapat siyang kumilos. I-install niya kami sa aming lupa at tanggalin niya si Pangandaman [What her secretary is doing to us is a shameful thing for the president, so she has to act. She should install us in our land and fire Pangandaman],” she said.

    Fire the Pangandamans.

Bambee went to the marshal bec. of the group behind them who were whining at that time. Where are they now? Why is there no mention of these people? And to the Pangandaman’s blog protectors, why are you so mad to the dela Paz family. Do you know them personally? Just leave it to the legal system and let them do their job. Don’t interfere with the justice system if there’s one.
You people have been mentioning the 2 sides of the story just listen and wait for the truth to come out. Why fight amongst fellow bloggers. No need to take the comments personally. View your opinions without fighting.
My view on this is, it is hard to believe that the golf employees were not influenced by powerful influential people.
To the golf club employees, tell the truth have conscience. Do not pretend that you don’t know anything. Remember Bambee called your attention with regard to the matter. Meaning she did not want any problem. Please give her the credit that’s due to her. She gave our country honor by playing golf and not by playing politics.

  85. i wonder what is the next thing that the de la paz apologists will say, now that valley golf expells Dela Paz and only suspends for two years the dar chief.

valley golf concluded that de la paz instigated the fight!

And a people, like many across the world wanted to self-govern. That Republic was short-lived and it became a Commonwealth of the Americans. But the dream never [...]
