Disturbing figures coming from drug enforcement agencies: 9 million drug addicts, ninety percent between the ages of 16 years old and 30. Another report this time from an intelligence unit of the government revealed that the usual profile of Filipino drug users are those belonging to the 14-25 age group. Imagine, very young men and women engaging in a vicious habit that threatens their very futures.
An ABS-CBN report by Korina Sanchez tonight showed that drug peddling in schools and universities is as frenetic an activity as enrolment. Drug agents have identified Centro Escolar University (CEU) and San Beda College (SBC) as two of at least a dozen other universities and colleges whose students are buying and selling illegal drugs. Teenagers buy and sell illegal drugs just like they swap or load their cellphones. Known teen hangout bars like Embassy and Warehouse in Makati were also identified. These shows you a totally drug-crazed landscape. We seem to have reverted back to the heady days of hippie counter-culture where drug use is one habit that’s sure hard to break.
What has happened to our youth? Is this worsening drug situation just an aberration or its a really, and truly serious problem that needs drastic measures? Some groups are calling for a re-institution of the death penalty. But, is this really the solution we need?
What’s wrong with the Filipino youth of today? Why is the Youth seemingly misdirected? Are we seeing the obvious social effects of neglect by many parents who are too busy earning money abroad? What’s the core of this social malaise?
Who’s to blame for this societal mess? Is it the church? Is it the parents? Is it government? Who in our society should we blame for this? Or this is the way the Youth is expressing their anger against the dysfunctionalism they’re experiencing?
Lives, families and futures are being destroyed. The Filipino Family is being destroyed. The Youth is being victimized. Directionless, the Youth is indulging in dangerous passions that threatens their future. We, all of us, are victims here. What are we doing about this?

Like most youth world-wide, Filipino teens are in that stage of barkada, discovery/experimenting, and peer pressure. Hence, these young people will try alcohol, marijuana, and sex; not necessarily in the order of my preference during my time.
Now you’re kidding yourself if you say “you smoked but did not inhale.” Next to prostitution, liqour and wine consumption would be the oldest vice. Note how each culture and peoples have their version of ‘agua de pataranta.’
I believe the parents, schools, and other support groups would have to enhance monitoring advice given the absence of one or both parents pervading because of the OFW diaspora.
However, many Filipino adults in their middle and senior ages are still into a deadly form of addiction. They are addicted to outright lying, cheating on their spouses, and corruption.
Now, which is a deadlier vice?
benign0 at kassandra, theory nyo parang mga pulitiko. mga ka bobohan.
and this is the root of all evil, mga kurakot na pulitiko. Nag papahirap ng mamamayan, walang maibigay na trabaho…kaya me mga OFW.
obviously mayaman kayo, pag sasampalin ko kaya kayo dyan
Strengthen our port to prevent foreign drug lords from supplying excessive amount of drugs. Prevent domestic production of marijuana and production of other addictive drugs.
Strengthen our Rule of Law. ( Justice Court)
Implementation must be carried out by the PDEA and other law enforcement agencies.
If all of those people in charge will implement according to their job description, work as a team and punish according to what’s written in the law. This country would be better off. It’s the PERSONNEL of this country that do not act and do their job right. The people are victims of government inaction.
This country is grasping for air. It has to live.
People,
Please stop blaming the youth. Look at the business side of the problem. Old people controlled the drug business. :)
jcc,
Availability of drugs are provided and produced by the olds. the youth are the consumers. the producers must be sent to jail and its agents, the pushers. No more “story telling a lie ” about the alabang boys, send them to jail without bail. I have no sympathy for the parents, they deserve it.
